I recall having a problem with the sight glass as well, the old one didnt show oil level very well either. I tried jacking one side of tractor and it didnt change.
I gave up on the whole thing, dropped oil replaced filter and put in a new sight glass. Hardest part was dealing with all the oil, coming out and pouring fresh oil back in.
