Hydraulic Flow Restrictor on 3rd Function for Samurai Sickle

I purchased a Samurai Sickle Bar Cutter for use on my B3200 (6.7 gpm) and my L6060 (9.4 gpm). I will be using 3/8 hose from the 3rd function quick connectors to the Samurai Cutter. The manufacturer felt that the pressure/flow on the B3200 would be fine for the cutter at a fair RPM to achieved the desired flow of 3.5-5GPM. They felt that the L6060 should be okay at a lower RPM, but if it operates the cutter too fast, I may need to install a flow control valve. They suggest the cutter operate at a speed where the teeth of the sickle cutter are visible, and not moving so fast that they are a blur.

The company provided the attached image for a suggestion on how a flow control valve could be installed. I can identify the pressure side of the 3rd function quick connectors and install the flow control as suggested, but since the 3rd function is a two way toggle switch, would this setup only provide a reduced pressure/flow if I use the side of the 3rd function switch that opens the pressure side? The cutter’s motor is bi-direction, so if I were to open the return side of the 3rd function will that pressure/flow to the cutter”s motor be unrestricted?

Anybody running a Samurai Sickle Bar off an L6060 3rd function, without a flow restrictor? Does it work okay at a lower RPM? The L6060 is rated at 9.4 gpm at 2600 RPM, I was planning on running the tractor at about half that RPM when using the Samurai.

This is prime example of why you want to stagger your 3rd function connections. Same hose gets hooked up every time. And once in cab, same button is pressed to run cutter.

If that was the case, and the opposite button were pressed, I don’t believe anything bad would happen. Cutter wouldn’t work as it would be fed pressure to both sides of motor(T fitting at flow control) pump would dead head and a relief valve would open on tractor.

My third function and implement quick connectors are all male/female, so they can only be connected one way, so they are always connected the same. I was more concerned about what would happen with the flow control if I press the return side of the 3rd function switch instead pressure side. I know which hose on the 3rd function is pressure and which side is tank. How can I tell on the two way toggle switch which port it is opening? I have a grapple attached to it now. Would the switch position that extends the grapple cylinders (bottom connection) be the pressure side, or can a grapple be connected to either port?

Both of your 3rd function hoses can supply pressure, depending on what button is pressed in cab. Just seeing the picture of the flow control, I don’t believe anything would happen if pressure was sent down the return(in this picture). Fluid would just dead head into itself and a relief would open on tractor, as designed. I don’t know what, if any, damage the flow control would sustain.

I do not understand what the toggle switch is for.

Nothing is going to happen to the flow control, besides not controlling flow hooked up backwards.
Most will not allow any flow in reverse so you would just put the hydraulic system in relief when you do that.

The toggle is mounted on the loader joystick to control the electric solenoid on the WR Long 3rd function. Press it one way the grapple opens, press the other way the grapple closes. I know which hose on the 3rd function connectors is the pressure side. My question is, when I connect it to the Samurai Sickle, how do I know which side of the toggle switch opens the pressure side so it flows correctly through the flow control to the cutters motor?

To see which line has pressure, crack the quick connects loose. Start tractor, press your button, see where fluid comes from. Plumb cutter in to that port.

Your grapple has a hydraulic cylinder, so the 3rd function switch position that opens the grapple fills the top of the hydraulic cylinder to retract it, that's the pressure side.

The 3rd function switch position that closes the grapple fills the bottom of the hydraulic cylinder to extend it and push the grapple jaws closed, that's now the pressure side.
