Follow up. I've done enough experimenting with the L2501, and my hearing is too important to keep trying different things. I talked to the dealer about a trade, and also put it on Craigslist. We will see what happens. either way it is an expensive 9 hours.
Tuition I guess - education is expensive.

With 9 hrs youd think the dealer would be happy to swap you into a gear slammer and have a happy customer. Since the gear is ~1200 cheaper anyway it shouldn't be a big deal honestly. Ive seen a few used L2501 pop up around here for 15,500-17,500. HST.

My Father in Law has bad tinnitus. He was a general contractor for decades and some days is stone deaf. Grinding bevels and welds on pipe at my last job has certainly hampered my tonal range. High pitched noises make me nauseous and I flat cant hear alot of low tones.

You have me wondering if my HST will get the best of me in my later years. Im in LO 99% of the time and dont really notice the whine.

i ordered some sound dampening mat, with a foil layer on top. i'm placing it under the seat and under the floor mat. i also bought two sided reflective sound deadening material (not rubberized) for the areas like around the controls and underside of body panels. all of it will be glued onto the panels or metalwork. the cab defiantly reflects more sound than a open control area.
maybe after installing the sound deadening materials, i'll be able to hear my phone ring or the radio.

I have bad tinnitus, and in the 6 hours that I have used my brand new L2501 I am starting to conclude that, even with ear protection, the HST aggravates my tinnitus in a way that a gear tractor does not. I really should have demo'd a HST before buying one. This is going to be an expensive lesson if I have to trade it in for gears... Ouch.

Other than the noise hurting my ears, my initial impressions have been that it is a great tractor.
drab m,
I too suffer with tinnitus from being in an artillery unit in the late '60s and early '70s. I use a custom fit in the ear insert AND aircraft style muffs. I also upgraded the muffs with double the foam. Audiologist says it is giving be a total sound reduction of about 105 db. I'm running a BX2350, chain saws, weed eaters, grinders, skill saws, and other power tools. As long as I wear BOTH, I can work for 4 to 5 hour straight and have no adverse effects from the noise.

Sure hate to see you trade such a great tractor for lack of hearing protection. Best of luck in what ever you decide to do.

I have just been driving around Michigan trying out B2650 hsdc's to see if I could find one that I could imagine spending 3 or 4 hrs in tne cab blowing snow. I thought the first one I drove was broken when I put it in reverse at idle, the racket was so loud. I did learn that there is a different type of hst in the B's compared with the L3560 I have. There is no such racket in my tractor. A mechanical linkage versus a fluid linkage controlled by valves and solenoid (and maybe even that swash plate I wondered about the other day.) I had no appreciation for how bad the " hst whine" could be. In any case I don't know which the base L's have, but if you can conceivably make use of a grand L, the money is worth it.

My wife works in a pharmacy. She says a lot of guys request this stuff. Some swear by it. If you go to your local pharmacy, ask if they can order it from their wholesaler. Depending on who's in charge, it can be had at a cheaper price. Some pharmacists are too lazy or just don't care enough to go through the extra effort for their customers.

My tinnitus is minor right now. Seems worse after a few days of using my chainsaw. I'm going to try it out.
