Transmission speed range lever has three speed range choices with two neutral positions: H-n-M-n-L. Each position has a detent that keeps the lever in that position. Those detents no longer work and the lever can easily slip from one position to the next. Visual inspection does not show how the detents work. Is this internal to the transmission case? What would cause this function to fail?

If you have checked everything externally that links to it then I wonder if it could be maybe a shift fork or detent ball issue. (tension spring, worn part, or bent)

When you hold it does it stay in gear and then slip whenever you let it go?

There's a spring and ball working in notches on the slide shaft. Cheap parts, but probably requires splitting the transmission.

Before you tear into it, it's not uncommon for that design to get rusted up on the input shaft making the detents seam non existent, try some good spay lube here in yellow.
