HST Gear Shift Lever

I took possession yesterday of a new L4701 HST. When switching between L M & H, it seems stiff. If I hold the brake and try to go between any combination of LM&H, it doesn't go. If I hold the brake try to shift and then push the treadle pedal and release it, the shifter seems to loosen up and then gets hard again.

Any ideas?

On the HST I own I'm pretty sure the owner's manual says to depress the clutch when shifting from L,M,H and only shifted when tractor is completely stopped.

Mine is a bit tight as well. I only have 15 hours on it so far and I assume this will loosen up over time. I have to come to a complete stop and sometimes slightly depress the go forward-go backward pedal as well.

On my B2601 mine will occasionally resist a L/M/H gear and I have to put it back to N and tap the rocker pedal a bit and then try shifting again. I haven't had any situations where it's failed to go into gear after that... I think its normal for HST to give some resistance trying to mesh up with a gear from time to time.

I would be willing to bet that your transmission will both become easier to shift and pull better as it wears in. You will figure out the proper procedure to shift as you gain experience.:)

Same here with my L4701HST.
Only 8 hours on it.
Hopefully it loosens up.
I also learned to raise front tires with FEL to shift out of 4 wheel drive.

Shifting back to 2 whl drive, complete stop, tires straight ahead, sum times a lil forward or rev on the pedal, as long as there is no load on the transfer case it’ll slip in or out of 4 whl

Yes, they are stiff. Usually I’ll tap the accelerator slightly fwd, rev. This may help you.

I found the same problem with my MX5200. It is hard to move between the ranges. I wondered what I was doing wrong the first time...
