How to store a Post Hole Digger

Saw this on another forum. Looks like a simple, inexpensive idea that would be really handy especially with anyone with forks. You can easily move the entire thing. Notice how the top cross piece slides in the metal brackets after the implements is backed up far enough.

I ratchet strap every thing together and lay it on pallet rack. That contraption looks like it might get a little top-heavy and tipsy as it's being moved around.

I made a simple 4X4 frame at the edge of the woods. Granted not mobile but simple and it works.
At the top of the 4X4's there is a bracket that a 2X4 slips into.

Just back into the space with 2X4 removed and phd high enough. Then slip in 2X4, lower phd onto it.

It made connecting / disconnecting a lot easier

My post hole digger is ancient and doesn't look like the ones in the pictures above. And it is extremely heavy. I have a tall frame with a chainfall hanging from it. The post hole digger hangs on the chainfall which is attached to the balance point of the post hole digger. That allows me to back the tractor up to the digger and attach it to the 3 point hitch easily as I can move the digger in all directions as needed.

I don't use the post hole digger very often. Main thing I learned was to remove the PTO shaft half that couples to the tractor and store it separately. Otherwise after not using it for a few years I would find the two sections of the PTO shaft frozen together (grease would harden) and impossible to attach to the tractor. Stored separately, when I'm ready to use the digger all I have to do is lube up the shaft and slip it together.

But then how do you lift it into position and mount it on the tractor, especially if you are by yourself?

I disassemble mine and pack it flat on a pallet and store it up high on a narrow shelf on the pallet racks. I don't like taking up valuable floor space for low use implements.

Great ideas. All of these are better than my "system" that involves laying it down against the wall in the tractor shed. I do disconnect the auger.

I try to keep most of my equipment (esp. pto driven) out of the elements here in PA.

How were you able to get the second mortgage for all that lumber?

I did something similar but just wrap a chain around the top post and the PHD. It mades it easy to cantilever it to mount. The wood eventually rotted. Now I just hang it fro a tree branch.

But then how do you lift it into position and mount it on the tractor, especially if you are by yourself?

I use fel to lift it down from pallet rack,carry to a tree limb and suspend with a chain or strap. When I finish I have to use limb to remove from tractor, strap it together and back to pallet rack.

After watching people use gas diggers I've thought of ditching my tractor digger. There's one version that sits engine on ground and runs flexiable cable to auger. Another has digger similar to a 2 man mounted on a dolly similar to a furniture dolly. Both dig as fast as a tractor and one man can move and use.

Hey don’t knock it—I just have a bftree, a straight one, I just ratchet strap it after backing up against it with auger vertical and then unhook the 3 pt and pto and drop both in 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in them to drain water.
Mine is old and very heavy hence the bft…

At our old house I did a similar 'hanging'. I was lucky, our deck was 10' off the ground.
