How often do you change the gearbox oil in your bush hog

Never changed mine in either the bat wing or the the rear mount.

When are you supposed to change the oil in your bush hog?

I have a bush hog 3308 and it does not mention it in the manual ( or I overlooked it)
I usually change all of mine about every three years.

A suction tank for use with inboard boat engines makes it easy.

I change mower gearbox oil every time it gets contaminated, otherwise I just keep it to the proper level. With the only opening being the fill plug I never have ever gotten anything contaminated in them.

I check the gearbox oil condition and level when I first use it each year. Top up oil if required, never had an issue with condition of oil. Not sure on recommended change period.

In times gone by.... like from the 1900’s up until around 2000... a gearbox such as a rear axle differential in a car/PU-truck was never changed in the life of the vehicle.... which was probably in the order of 100K miles or so for the average person. (My ‘64 Dodge 440 inherited from my parents had 167K when I sold it but I’m unusual... I keep vehicles until they’re wrecked.... the only reason I sold it was the guy who bought it was needful and couldn’t afford anything. I sold it (and it’s leaky, push-button transmission) for $50 in 1976. But 30+ years is the norm for me.)
Anyway, closed helical gearboxes were never changed and manual transmissions were rarely changed until 50K or so. THEN along came the millenium and all of a sudden car makers put limits on rear differentials on the order of 30K miles for oil changes and often specify SYNTHETIC on top of that! I ignore that and do it at 100K using whatever fluid they call for , but I am NOT going to do it every 30K miles.

Bush-Hog/shredder/etc?? Never. Use ordinary GL5 80/90 gear oil and check the level occasionally. That’s it.

BTW, in case anyone wants to know if I have any basis for my actions.... I paid my way thru college and flight school rebuilding differentials as a rear-axle-specialist for Gulf States Toyota in the early ‘70s, driving to/from work in my ‘51 Chevy P/U bought from a gov’t (US Dept of Agriculture) auction for $150. Six cylinder, manual tranny, with a heater and a steel-floor bed... and that’s ALL it had. Friends said the color matched my personality.... olive drab.

LOL. Your truck sounds like the '61 Chevy my dad bought from a business going out. No oil filter, no turn signals, manual choke, only mirror was on the driver's side door. But the guy had put 8 ply mudgrip tires and overload springs on the back.

I can only remember changing bush hog gearbox oil once in my life about twenty years ago. they usually rusted out first and got sold for parts.

I check the level each year before first use, in fact today I'll be using it for first time this year to cut down garden it is about done.

Couple years ago I changed it and went with Mobile One synthetic, prior to that it was never changed by previous owner. Had the original fluid in it from around 2000 when it was purchased.

I'll give it a good once over today, tighten anything that is loose, oil level check, grease pto and off to work.
