An example. Things don't line up, a lot of employees watching doing nothing and the design was wrong from the beginning.

I have seen some outcomes in the private sector that also make you shake your head.

I just saved this little gem to share with my boss:

I'm a Federal government employee and this seems to ring true for me...

Jay I find that funny, but do take some exception to the not working part. Granted there are a lot that do nothing and get away with it because,,,, well I shall not get in to politics here.
And there others of us that carried them and in some cases made them look good. I have scars, broken bones and replaced joints ,and lungs that do not work as God intended them to.
8 to 10 hour days under ground and then finish the paper work when you get ack to the office, we are on call 24/7/365.
SO yeah there are a lot of slugs working,, err being paid by the gobermint , there are a lot of us that do work, unseen and for the most part unknown by anyone but our peers.

Nobody in the US federal government makes $780K. The highest ranking federal official (president) makes $400K. Most federal employees make less than $100K, and usually considerably less. But you’re in Canada, so maybe…

ok, some actually do work, but they have to be the minority.
here in Ontario we got 500,000 new residents (aka 'immigrants') last year and not one word as to the building of a CITY the size of Hamilton (+- same population...).KInda need water, sewers, cops, hospitals, stores, etc.... Huge scandal about 'greenbelt' being paved over for $$$ houses. JUST houses.
locally, city Bylaw got 13 complaints of weeds at same address, 3 MONTHS ago. guy comes out (7 weels later) posts 'must cut weeds' order. owner crys 'i can't afford a weedwhacker', gets 2 weeks extension, that was 4 weeks ago, she lives in a millon buck home, sprawling 2 acres, fancy car..... Who knew Goldenrod can grow over 6 feet tall !!!
BTW that sunshine list does NOT include doctors even though they get paid WITH taxpayers coins !!!
Overall, you could remove 60-75 % of all 'civil servants' and NO change in how the country would run. Start at the top of the pile.

Never heard of government railroad construction. This is a private industry operation.
I think this was mostly just a meme, but not that far off from the truth for many govt operations.

Sure, sometimes govt planning/engineering is ok. The point, to me, is that many times, there is no explanation for what the roads/rail is doing other than it's convenient for the people doing the work. Most of us have seen projects conducting only during the busiest times, for instance. The issue is there is no accountability or incentive to do the work correctly the first time since the govt/us will just write another check on a loan to do the job again to get it right.

There is a long history of state, local, and federal govt involvement in rail. Of course, highways are typically built by contractors/private companies as well, but the money and approval of the plan comes from the governments involved. In my own area, they recently finally removed tracks from busiest roads that haven't been used in years. It was not paid for by the rail companies. No trains have used those tracks for a very long time.

Some history of railroads ... not that you can trust wikipedia for all topics, but this one seems pretty extensive.

The only rails we have are extremely busy (major east/west route- BNSF). And a small portion of Southern Pacific. They are extremely busy with container freight and maintain the system very well. The state highway departments seem to be the opposite. Their contractors seem to take ridiculous amounts of time to complete work, and some doesn’t meet specs, so they have to re-do it.

Actually, Fauci made more than the president (both in salary and pension).

Fauci was a political appointee and I don’t know how he got such a deal. See the link for salaries of typical civil service employees in the US. Also note that the bulk of federal employees are GS 7-12, not GS-15.

I've been after the county to trim the low hanging trees over our road as some are so low they have knocked off my RV's tv antennae & front AC cover off. I used to do it but I just don't have it in me any longer. The supervisor actually told me his boom mower operator does not like to look up so he doesn't trim out over the road. WTF ?

I retired from the federal government after 30 years.

Fauci's salary was paid under one of several special schedules that exists for employees with special skills/expertise.

No doubt that’s true, but as you are well aware, those special schedule pay scales are for a rarified number of federal employees, most of us are paid according to the OPM schedule I posted. I have 32 years service, but not retired yet.
