I have a holly bush in front of the house, and normally it has a ton of berries. Over the years I have tried to start these seeds but to no avail. I have even tried cutting with a root hormone ,, nada. The point is these berries are eaten by the birds, and I have watched all the winter birds consuming them. But tis morning sitting here I am watching 3 Eastern Blue Birds feasting on them. If the blue birds are back in bright bleu plumage how far off can spring be?

Springs not close enough, since I no longer do winter sports, and we've had some freeze/thaw cycles which I hate and the wind has been awful. I had to look up a map of the blue bird range and it seems they take up permanent residence a lot farther north than I thought. Some maps show all the way up into NY but this one seems more typical.

Yeppers, winter is no longer fun for old Dad either. This has got to be the earliest I have seen blue birds since I moved to the ridge here30 some years ago. And I agree the warm and freeze is hard for everything , but maybe the warmth brings out the stink bugs and the freeze kills them.

Spotted a male Eastern Bluebird over Christmas while at the family get together in central MA. Also, Dark Eye Junco. If I see either of those birds up here in late December. Something is really off.

What I use to consider schizo winter weather is now more or less normal. From 10 degrees below normal highs to 20 degrees above normal highs. Like yesterday and today. Mid to upper 40sF. At least the weekend was "normal" with highs in the 20s and primo cord snowboarding conditions. Guessing will be solid rock hard tomorrow.

Driveway should be a solid ice covered surface. Stinks when you need 4x4 and shut off the traction control to get uphill home. Tons of salt and sand just sprayed on the township road. Keeps people from sliding into the highway at the bottom and getting T-boned or continue over the edge into L. Superior. Most of the time. For some reason people think 4x4 or AWD stops faster than 2 wheel drive.

The Mrs. heard what could (?) be a Redtailed Hawk chick in our backyard (woods) today.

We've had them nest up there for quite a few years now, so she recognized the sound.....

Kind of early, but who knows....
