How do you put a new boot on the FWD tube?

This is on a "new to me" 1977 B6100D. I just noticed that the tube for the front drive shaft was rattling or loose at the top. I assume the boot is gone. How do I replace the boot? Will I need to split the tractor?

Thanks Vic. I will look into it. Shortening the tube sounds like a good idea. I was hoping for a split boot like they used to have for the old VW swing axles. Will it do any harm if I use the tractor to mow until winter? The only other reason I was considering spiting it now was because the clutch is way too sensitive. The tractor sat for 2 years out in the weather. I suspect the fly wheel and pressure plate have rust on them and is making the clutch engage too quick. I suppose with time it will smooth out.

Vic, I just looked closer at the B6100 and also my B7100 and the parts book. I may have miss lead you or I don't understand. There looks to be only one boot on the tube and that is at the front where it hooks to the cover of the front universal. It is in tact. The back of the tube just has the nylon bushing and seal. When I checked the B6100 a little closer, I see the tube, nylon bushing and seal have all separated from each other. The seal is about a half inch up the shaft from the bushing and the busing is up from the tube. Do I need to replace the bushing and seal or can I just remove the tube and reinsert them?

Vic, I had to disconnect the front u-joint and pull the tube off, then drive the nylon bushing and seal back into the tube and reassemble. There was about 2 oz of oil in the housing over the u-joint. I assume that is seepage through the seal in the front differential case and doesn't have to be replenished? Thanks for the help,

John

Do you add any fluid to the resevoir that this PTO slides into?
I have a B7000 and past the rubber boot towards the front there is a aprox 5/16 bolt on the side of what looks like a resevoir. Do I add and check fluid at this bolt?

150baker, I responded to your other post with what I know. I will add here, though, that I didn't add any oil when I put it back together, because as you said the manual is silent. It is a curiosity why it has fill and drain holes. Maybe it had something to do with running the front end under water in the rice paddies of it native country. It certainly wouldn't hurt to add oil since the seal leaks through a little anyway. I used UDT oil in all of the other reservoirs.
