How Do I Adjust Hydraulic Pressure?

I am new to tractors and am looking for help with hydraulic issues on my recently purchased (30 year old) L245DT. When I first got it a few months ago the 3-point and FEL were intermittent. After cleaning the screen and flushing the hydraulic system (several times) it quit working altogether. So I removed, cleaned, and reinstalled the by-pass valve (under the seat on the left side on top of the rear axle). It had two washers on each side of the spring. I set it for minimum spring tension (thinking minimum pressure). I also removed the Hydraulic Pump and found the pump shaft to be frozen and a broken in half shaft key. I ordered a replacement pump and installed it last week. At first the 3-point and FEL worked 'real good' for about 10 hours of operation. Then when lifting a heavy load with the FEL the side of the hydraulic pump split open. Can someone please tell me what went wrong and where to look for the problem? Thank you for any help you can offer, Kubota Knerd.

The "washers" you removed from the pressure relief valve are shims that adjust the pressure points, you need to put gauge on it and get it back to factory specs. ;)

Sounds like you "adjusted" your pressure point the wrong way, hence the pump "exploding". Put the pressure relief valve together the way it was to start with. Hook a manometer up and check what pressure you have, and go from there.

Thanks guys for your reply. I did put it back the way it was (except for the sludge inside the relief valve). The washers are still there. The only difference was the adjusting nut was back out for minimum spring tension.

So now I am wondering if min. spring tension = max. oil pressure; or if min. spring tension = min. oil pressure and maybe the relief valve 'stuck' in a closed position?

So how do I know what the hydraulic pressure is? I would like to put a pressure gauge on the high pressure (discharge) side of the hydraulic pump but don't see a place for it in the pipe that runs from the pump to the ?? block under the seat. Is there an adaptor plate available to fit between the round 3-bolt block on the pump discharge; or between the round 3-bolt ?? block under the seat? Or can I simply drill and tap that block for my 1/4" MPT pressure gauge?

Click on the picture of the tractor and go from there.

After that if you click on "tractor manuals" then I can only find my model L245F listed which is the same as yours except I have two wheel drive as opposed to your four wheel drive if you didnt already know that. You have the tractor I want. lol.
Anyway my point is that the info listed under the L245F should hopefully help you in some way just the same.
