The OP wants everyone to know that he is going to do something completely different and possibly not the smartest. He needs everyone’s reassurance that what he is proposing to do is correct even though it probably isn’t to make himself feel good. Obviously has self confidence issues or would have just changed the oil and never posted a word about it online.

1000 hours.
Busted front axle parts.
Thinks it's a defect.
Wants to "fix" it with the wrong oil.

😂

Never heard of tribology or rheology to be honest and had to look them up. Thanks for the education. Guess I was part of the audience of one.

Quite welcome. Its an interesting distinction isnt it 🤔

Dan
Yes it is. I found it quite interesting and will be reading more about it. Never too old to learn. Cheers.

Higher weight oil does not also mean more shear resistant. Heavier oil just does not flow as easier as thinner oil or you can say thinner oil flows too easy, if you like.
Shear resistance is a property of the molecule chain length. Gear oil can be the same weight as 'engine' oil but has a higher amount of these long chain molecules that the high pressures of gears meshing snips up.These long chains are not typically used in engine oil due to the excessive drag they impart and no other benefit.

Some run ATF of the proper weight (to ensure if lows) as ATF is chock full of long chain molecules and is wet clutch/wet brake friendly.

However, for the amount of runtime between changes, Kubota SUDT is not a big deal and made for gears.

UMMM is calling him dumb and insult???
Tell me why I shouldn't give you a vacation too?
This is somewhat rhetorical as he did poke you with a sharp stick that got the ball rolling.

In other words, I get it but No please.

Deaf and DUMB is that reference but used as a double entendres I believe. Used to refer to people that could not speak for the younger people in the audience.

That is not a defense really.

I will absolutely tell you so take ypur finger off the trigger.

When I responded to his earlier post Hagrid responded to me:

"He cant hear you"

I understood what Hagrid meant.
I responded to Hagrid:

"He is dumb not deaf"

Meaning he could not post (speak) because he was in a timeout but coould still read (hear) my posts. I am sure Hagrid got it but apparently not everyone....

It was a simple word game between Hagrid and I. I am not that nefarious and most defininitly not that subtle.

Yeah, I had to look it up too.. Interesting and actually valuable to understand. At the risk of too many words:
-----
Tribology
Tribology is the science of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It encompasses the study of friction, lubrication, and wear between surfaces in contact
1
2
.Key aspects of tribology:

  • Focuses on surfaces in close contact or relative motion
  • Studies friction between interacting surfaces
  • Examines lubrication and wear of materials
  • Applies to thin films and boundary lubrication conditions
Rheology
Rheology is the study of the flow and deformation of materials, particularly fluids and soft solids
1
2
.Key aspects of rheology:

  • Investigates how materials flow and deform under applied forces
  • Examines viscosity, elasticity, and other flow properties
  • Applies to thicker films and bulk material behavior
  • Studies material responses to different shear rates and stresses

Somewhat related. Back in the 1990’s had a 1989 F150 with manual transmission. Go to change the transmission fluid at around 50k miles. Spec states automatic transmission fluid. Me knowing better knows that a manual transmission needs gear oil so I put in 75w90. Go for a test drive and you literally could not shift the tranny. Drain and replace with atf and all is good. Draw your own conclusions for your differential.

quite a few customers asked to have 85w140 in their front axles, saying it leaks out slower. I can't think of one that ever had a failure to my knowledge.

I had the rear cover on my 1979 F250 rear differential get torn at the bottom edge by a rock and didn't notice it until the rear started to make strange sounds. A friend replaced the cover and cleaned out all the loose metal chips. I bought a used differential but never got around to installing it in the truck and parked the truck out of sight, out of mind. Last fall I got the truck out of cold storage, got it started, repaired the brakes, and this past spring I started to use it to pull the dead cars out of the woods to scrap them. After the second car, the clutch started slipping, so I drove the truck back to its resting place and parked it. The next time that I tried to move it, it went about 4 or 5 feet and the rear locked up. When I took the cover off, the pin that connects the 2 spider gears had come loose and hit the inside of the differential housing. It was bent like a pretzel. The gear lube that was installed was thick, but it didn't help at all and now everything is junk. This is what is going to happen to Orange Power if he doesn't fix it properly now before the differential housing also becomes junk. Maintenance delayed is maintenance denied to the detriment of the machine.
