the canary has been singing to me again. cheap-cheap-cheap.
i realy need some turf-ribbed tires to put my chains on. not for the price they want for 22 in tires. has anybody tried puting 22.5 truck tires on the bota,s
22 in rims?? anyhoooooo while i,m scroungeing i thought i,d try this. i hardfaced some self tapping screws. they should last as they are just for
plowing the driveway.

We did that when racing motorcycles on ice, but had about 200 per tire and no hard surfacing.
Also did that on my 10hp walk behind snow blower.
We found if you went with too few they would rip out because all the traction was on so few studs.
You might want about 4-5 per tread.

I like that canary you have, he just keeps giving you really good ideas :D

Brian, thanks for tossing in that advice learned from experience. By the way, you are a bad ass for racing motorcycles on ice.....WOW

u could be right Brian. i
have used the motorcycle studs too. they are a lot smaller shorter,
5/8 in is the longest and they are sharp. i think the rubber is harder
on this tractor tire and u notice the lenght of my studs. i left them rounded
so the are,nt so inclined to tear out of the rubber. the tiny car carbide
studs are soon rounded after a 100 miles on paved roads. they still grip
on ice. time will tell.

Wouldn't a hex head grip better than rounded head?
Aerator for the lawn come Spring.
it most deffinetly would. but without hard faceing they would wear
real quick. my other tractor has big ring logging skidder chains with big lugs.
i have to keep puting hard faceing on the lugs or they would be gone. this is just plowing my own yard, this is a ford 3000 and the wheels are spinning
fowrard and backwards. i know this little guy will be a bit slower. LOL
i figure the tall rounded head when it wears. i hace somethig to grab and remove them for refaceing. i know that this wiil chew up ice. i figure that there is less chance to tear the lugs up. time will tell.

meanjean, what size are your screws, #8 or#10 or #12??????
i have plowed twice now and i,m in 3rd gear high range and pedal to the metal
2900 rpm and the wheels spin when dump the clutch. i have not lost any yet.
remember when i told u the little sharp edges might be to aggressive. that might be pulling them out. just a thought.

10x5/8.
Too short as I've already lost a fe of em.
Going to move up to 1 inch. If I had a grinder I'd hard face them like you did.
Amazing the difference with studs in.

#10 screws are .188 which is 3/16 dia. are they pulling out or breaking off???
remember the 3/16 diameter is the overall dia, the minor dia is mighty small.
my #14 screws are !/4 overall diam, the minor dia is 3/16. the bigger screws
have deeper thread flutes and bigger area for holding in. i could be wrong.

They are pulling out.
I installed roughly 85 per tire, doubt there are more than 20 remaining (per tire).

You also used 1.25 deep screws which provides a greater "holding" strength.
I am worried 1.25 will be too deep as my tires look worn more than yours.
Size 10 has a smaller head, was hoping that would keep them from pulling out.
Will try 12x1 inch next with thread lock.

Will hard face if they pull out.
Been meaning to buy a bench grinder.

MeanJean,
You are probably getting better traction, thus the reason for them pulling out.

The hard-surface rounds the head for less grip and a little slip.

Looks like LRP has the answer. :D

14x1 self tapping hex bolts.
Dipped each in construction adhesive.
Spun with a cordless drill until the rubber melted a bit.
Ooey gooey stickiness.
All bolts are holding and piles of traction now.

150 potential flats might make one of the magnetic pick-up units from Harbor Frieght cost effective. You can get a walk behind one that covers about two feet pretty cheap, I have no idea what one of the pull behind units would cost.

Good call on the magnet.
I'm going to keep my eyes open for a sale at Princess Auto.

Looks like I will need to hard face as per LRP's advise as I have lost studs again.
Fart!!
