Help me - broken PTO shaft

Hello-
I feel terrible. I was trying to help out my husband by mowing the lawn while he was gone on a camping trip. The tiller and mower deck were both attached to our Kubota BX2660. I forgot to detach the PTO when I removed the tiller, and so the force of pulling it off broke the plastic protective shield. Also, and worse, the long inner bar came out about halfway, pushed on part of the tiller, and was dented. Also, the part of the PTO that connects to that inner par - the part that is attached to the tiller, had an about 1/8" thick ring that was broken. I attaches a picture. Any idea how much this will cost to fix? Is it possible that I could get a new part and replace it this weekend?

Okay, it's me again. I'm kind of embarrassed. I think I just need to get a new PTO shaft. It looks like they run about $125. Going to call locally to find one.

Happy, I would suggest you leave it until your husband returns from his trip. You were trying to help, and now feel bad the part is broken and want to repair it.

It I were in his position I would prefer to evaluate the problem and get it fixed as I see fit. Notice all the "I's" in that sentence?

Let him determine the damage and the method repair. It will probably cost less, because if you go ordering parts you may not get all needed, or the wrong ones, or they don't fit. Then when he gets home he has additional problems.

Happy, let me affirm D2cat's advice.

You're fine doing the research and tracking down parts and vendors.

But let hubby be part of the decision-making.

It's hard to say, but looking at the picture the only thing I see broken is the plastic shielding. The PTO shaft is likely okay. Just needs to be put back together, if it is pulled completely apart. Shielding is inexpensive and easily replaced. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Skip the fix, I'm sure you have better ways to make it up to him.

I think if it was me I would rather just have the honest truth without the fix (cover up) being done. If he loves it like you say he's going to want to spend some alone time with the tractor so he can talk to it and tell it how bad he feels. He may even promise to never let anyone else on it again. Most likely some cussing, head scratching and a few how the hell did she do that. Then he'll probably be over it other than a few cheap shots aimed your way to make you feel even worse.

I would like nothing more than to see my better half competent on all my machines. Shes terrified half the time and unattentive the other half.
My biggest concern is her safety.

That hits home. My wife does great on the stuff I have taught her to do but she thinks she should be able to do everything I can. I want to help her learn and be able to do anything she wants to but I see things she doesn't. Small stuff that only someone with experience would notice that may lead to a bigger issue down the road. I guess I make some of the stuff look easier than it is so she feels like it's all a piece of cake. Needless to say we don't see eye to eye and I get a ear full about it.

I really don't think there's one single answer that will make everyone happy.
