You really don't need to till the ground to plant a good food plot. The ideal way do it is to get in touch with your USDA conservation officer in your county. He can give you information on where to rent no-till drills. These machines can be rented by the acre. All you do is set it up, load it with the seed and drive through the fields. The drill cuts a small slice in the dirt, distributes seeds sparingly then rolls the seed into the sliced soil. This method conserves soil moisture, prevents erosion and uses the least amount of seed. Go to your Ag Extension office in your county and learn how to take soil samples. You will then know how much and what type of fertilizer and additives (lime etc) may you need per acre thereby saving you some money.
