That is one of the more interesting methods of hedge trimming I have viewed recently. I have been trying to come up with an easier way to mow my stream bank (currently backing a 7' finish mower over the edge, but it's very time consuming).
I have a stihl extended hedge trimmer that also angles. It worked surprisingly well on the stream bank, and gave a very nice cut. A verge flail mower or an old school sickle is the tool for my application, but I can't justify the price (yet!)

Going back 60 years or more when I was 10 years old.

Our neighbors, father and son, had a new two stroke rotary mower, one of the first rotary push mowers for home owners. It smoked so bad no mosquitoes would come around.

The father and son would start the mower and then, with each holding two wheels above their shoulders, trim their hedge. No safety eye protection. Each had to absolutely trust nothing would make the other let go of the wheels and the mower then swing down towards the other.

The FEL method seems so much safer and easier.

I have a neighbor who use to put a small Allis tractor with a sickle bar mower on it, on a hay wagon. Then pull the wagon with the sickle mower running along the hedge row to trim it.

My story is only about 35 years old. I had an acquaintance who ws a police officer. He responded to a call where an elderly couple had cut the tips of their fingers off trying the exact same thing.....but by grasping the bottoms of the mower.

Got a friend that mounts his push mower on the side of his atv. Uses it to mow his trails through the golden rod. I don't have a pic but it's the same redneck principals

A hydraulic motor running a sickle mower mounted to loader.

M.B.(in sig) built a sickle mower to run under water, mounted it to the tray of his wild rice harvester. Used a long belt to keep electric motor out of the water and a generator to run it. Cutting off the weeds below water line took care of the infestation in the rice lake.

I have a few friends with rice lakes, havent bought wild rice in 20 years.

Oops, i wandered.
So a short sickle mower,a two or 3hp electric motor and a gennie tied to hood of tractor. Some creative bracketry and it would cut horizontal or vertical.

Years ago we were toying around with the idea of running a long vertical chainsaw for trimming the sides of snowmobile trails. Too many safety concerns for it to be practical.

There is a product called Sabre Samurai that is a hydraulic sickle cutter designed to be mounted on the loader bucket in almost any position and claims a 1.5" cutting capacity.
