With an auto trans the torque is put under load in drive.

So I wouldn't try that.

Not sure how putting a car in D, and applying the foot brake is any different than putting it in D and applying the parking brake?

Maybe in 1965, TC’s worked differently, but not to my knowledge. 🤷‍♂️

You should be able to have it in D at standstill indefinitely. Same thing as if you are stuck in a traffic jam. What you cannot do is running the engine at higher revs or holding the car at a steep slope with the accelerator.

Possibly a clutch or brake band was slipping and burnt out eventually. This would have been a faulty gear box to start with.
