I actually know an Ex-Fireman that was doing the shift inspection of the fire truck and when checking the battery water " flipped his bic " so he could see the water . He got lucky & didn't lose an eye.
My Dad was 25 yrs with Dallas, Tx Fire Dept.

Does the US not have an “approved containers rule”? If I was working at the gas station I wouldn’t even turn the pump on for stupidity.

For sure, lots of stupid people out there, but a lot of the blame should go to the station attendant as well. With the mirror set-up most of the stations have, the attend should be shutting off the pump, to help the idiots out. I believe the law states that fuel can only be pumped into legal containers.
To be fair, stupid people can become rather violent when you try to stop their stupidity. And you never know how many people they have in their face yelling about "why are you out of gas?!?!"

Yes, there are signs mounted prominently on all pumps stating that you must use approved containers.
