I thinking about buying a L2550 with the GTS transmission. The owner says gears 1-4 work great but 5-8 don’t work at all. Does anyone know what this could be,is it an easy fix or should I walk away. He is asking $5,500.

It's GST, Glide Shift Transmission.

How mechanically inclined are you?
If none then pass, if a little then maybe.
If a lot, go for it, I can even show you all of what the guts look like, I've was into mine 3 times before I sorted out the issue, I bought mine completely broken.

It could just be a bad clutch disk, they will slip in high range, which 5-8 are, when they start going out.

Easy to tell, engage the PTO try to move it in 5-8 if the PTO stops spinning then it's 100% a fried clutch, if it continues to spin then it's a problem in the Transmission, that on a GST is a bit of work but not impossible to fix.

If it’s just the clutch I can handle that I’m just hoping it doesn’t need a new transmission. Also would like to ask is the L2550 just an over grown garden tractor?
Busby, welcome to the forum.

Your question is a fair one. Some will say absolutely not, others say ya. I guess it depends on the size of ones garden. About anyone who would say yes is probably massaging their own ego because they have a larger tractor!!:D

It won't need a new transmission... And FYI: If it did need a new transmission, you wouldn't be able to get one! ... It might need parts, those can be had. ;)

Run away! Dont walk.

IMHO buy an HST or gear Tranny only and save yourself a lot of grief. Search GST problems on this site if you dont believe me. Too many electronic things to go wrong in GST

I've never had a GST and never worked on one.

That said, my neighbor bought a new one with a new LP 6' rotary cutter about 10 years ago. Don't know the model number but it's about 30-35 PTO HP.

He's VERY hard on everything and the tractor shows it. The mower is completely trashed.

He's not had any trouble with the GST.

mikester that is good to know. I defiantly don’t wanna buy something that is going to to be a problem child. If it needed a clutch and it’s good to go that okay but I don’t wanna be working on more than I’m using it.

I wouldn't trade my GST for anything.

P.S. It's NOT electronically controlled.

Wrong. No electronics involved. All mechanical / hydraulic actuation.

All other have said, there is ZERO electrical involved in a L2550 GST. ;)
Much newer GST's yes, older ones no, and even those are pretty much issue free.
I have an L3450 GST so bigger and newer than the L2550 and have had zero issues since I rebuilt it, and the rebuild was do to a mechanics major screw up!
