GST shifting question

When I am starting off in say 5th gear and then shift up as road speed increases, I let up on the throttle between shifts but as the higher gear engages, the shifts feels like they take a second to engage and when it does engage the trans makes an odd sound and the shift is quite "hard"; like there is a little "slop"
I am new to GST and Kubota so I want to know what your experience is.
Thanks,
Andrew

The problem is most likely you. The GST has a computer that judges how hard or soft to make the shift relative to speed and other factors, if you vary the throttle during the shifts you are probably confusing the computer, keep it at a steady speed and see what it does.

Andrew, my 98 - L35 has the GST. It does make some noise when shifting up w/o the clutch, especially from 4th to 5th. It was a lot quieter when I first bought it. The mistake I made was to change the trans/hyd oil w/ Wal Mart oil after I dumped several gallons overboard from a broken hose on the BH. I've since put UDT back in with 1 - 2.5 gal of Super UDT added. My dealer here in TX said it would be fine and not to worry. The trans is quieter now and I shift it most times w/o the clutch, just vary the motor rpm. I absolutely do not shift up or down under load. I don't think mine has a computer, if it does, it has never given me any trouble. The next time I change the trans oil, I will put Super UDT back it. Hope this helps.

sam427 - I will try a more steady throttle.
pat331 That is very informative, in fact i recently changed my trans oil with Traveller premium UDT that I bought at...walmart! I assumed, perhaps wrongly that UDT was UDT even if it was 1/2 the price of Kubota oil!

Do you all shift up 1 gear at a time or more?

I shift 1 gear at a time w/o use of the clutch. I select which ever gear I need when I depress the clutch. I'm sorry to hear you used a different oil. There are a couple of threads here on OTT that centered on discussions of brands of UDT oil. I found from those discussions that Kubota Super UDT is synthetic and Kubota UDT is not. Both have additives that the other off brands do not have. I believe it required that Super UDT be used in all Kubotas with HST transmissions and highly recommended for GST transmissions. As I stated earlier, mine had Super UDT in it new. I also learned, it is best, if you live in a colder climate, that you use Super UDT in your tractor. In the previous threads, some of our fellow OTT participants recommended AMZOIL products, which are all synthetics. I'm running AMZOIL 15W-40 in my Kubota and Ford 7.3 Super Duty engines. My advice to you is to change back to Super UDT as soon as you can. You might get by by using a magnetic block heater on your transmission this winter or keeping it inside or both. The off brand oil in mine did much better when it was warm/hot. Hope this helps and let us know how you progress.

Pat331 Good advice on all counts. I will run this oil for a while and see how it goes and may switch to super udt if I have problems.
I put Rotella 10-30 C -rated petro oil in the motor which is spec'd in the fsmanual, but will upgrade to 5-40 synth if cold starting is a problem.
I run rotella 5-40 in all my whole diesel fleet with no issues.

I don't have super utd in mine and it seems fine. I did however use a high quality oil, Shell Donax TD. They have a Donax TDL, which would be comparable to SUTD.

I run Shell 15w-40 in mine in the summer, and just changed to the Rotella 5w-40 for winter use, T6 I believe it was, full synthetic. The engine does seem a little quieter, but could just be the difference in a new oil change.

There is alot of discussion on lubricants, maybe Mr. K. needs to give us a new heading!

Concerning transmission oils it's important to remember this. Kubota does not 'refine'. WalMart does not refine. Neither does John Deere, Massey, New Holland or Kioti.

The common thread with all these different brands of oils is they are all made at a refinery to certain specification and 'private branded' for the OE, (John Deere, Kubota etc) and the aftermarket, (Walmart, NAPA, etc)

Wheter the oil you are considering using is synthetic or non synthetic, chances are other than the color of the label on the pail and the confusing 'name brand' given to it, it's all the same!

It's really a matter of choice. Somewhere in a John Deere parts department is a pail of Transmission Fluid that's identical to Kubota's SUDT.
I'll have to disagree, all oils are not equal. Oils vary wildly from different manufacturers. The base stocks the oils are made from has a huge impact on the quality of the oil, from there they each add their own home brew recipe to arrive at the final product. The best base stocks for petroleum type oils comes from west texas crude, bar none! There is no way that Wally World label oil will be as good as one of the better oils, it may meet a minimum spec., but will not be as good as far as quality. Oils like Shell Rotella, Mobil One, Castrol GTX, and the like, did not become so popular because they were average and meet a minimum spec.:D
