Hello everyone. I just bought a used GF 1800 and am going through it before I use it. The PO abused it a little and neglected it a lot. The grease zerk on the right blade spindle for the 54" deck was broken off. I drilled and tapped in a new zerk. I couldn't find any ports in the drilled out hole, and it would not accept grease when the zerk was installed. Can I please have some advice?

Thanks,

Bret

Is it possible the port is just clogged from where it was broke off and filled with grime?

Could you take a piece of wire or a small drill bit and gently try to remove the grim and clear the path? Of course with the zerk removed:D

I have a handle that I can put small drill bits in to use for semi delicate work that I turn with my fingers.

Comes in handy for putting a real small bit it when I need to remove blood from under a nail when I have smashed my finger.

Explain what you mean,
"I couldn't find any ports in the drilled out hole"

Is the new zerk taking grease at all - test it while off the spindle.

I didn't see any plugged ports when I cleaned out the tapped hole. I'll probe around with a wire. I always really heat up the bit for my fingernails- let's you know your alive!

I mean that drilling out the hole did not reveal the channel for the grease to get in there. Do you know if the port is straight down or channeled along the sides? I did not test the new zerk and should have. I will when I get home.

Thanks.

Are you talking about the grease fitting on the top of the spindle? If so, remove the fitting you installed and make sure it accepts grease by itself.

Then clean out the dried grease/dirt with some liquid like PB Blaster and a small drill bit (turned by hand). Get it as clean as you can. Then fill the cavity with the Blaster and let it set for some time (over night). Then install the grease fitting.

Do the same with any other problem zerks.

Perhaps that spindle has been rebuilt with sealed bearings, and a greaser is no longer needed. (Or never was;-)

When one buys something that's been around a while, who knows what's been done to it?

According to the parts drawings Kubota has online it originally had a grease zert. The bearings are sealed... on the outside. Grease goes in the center of the spindle and fills the cavity between the bearings and includes the bearings if enough grease is pumped in!!
