Hi all. I purchased a new GR2120 in 2019. Absolutely love it! Main reason for my choice was to be able to mow the slope along our road frontage. The 4wd and low centre of gravity combine to handle the task with confidence. Lots of power and manoeuvrability. My only complaint is the gearbox on the deck. I like to keep my equipment clean but the gearbox continually spews oil which then collects dust and grass. On my last service I measured the drained oil at 75ml vs the required fill of 150ml. It seems to be blowing out of the vent on the top. If this is normal it seems like a poor design. My question: is this normal and something other users are seeing?

I guess I should have been more specific. The ‘oil’ I am referring to is the recommended Kubota Super UDT-2 fluid.

You'd better keep that gearbox oil topped off and also figure out why it's leaking. Our 2022 GR2120 with only 150 hours is in the shop now with a failed gearbox, about two months after the warranty expired. Kubota will not help us at all with the cost, which is going to be about $2000. I was a longtime Kubota proponent who has completely lost faith in them now.

SUDT 2 seems too thin for that gear box. (just my $.02) IDK how different that box is than the one on my 60" deck on the G2160 but I'm running 90W150 in it synthetic IIRC it's Lucas branded. Runs quiet and no leak/blow out.

To Tylerperk, so sorry to hear about your gearbox failure. Yes, I had been keeping my fluid level up and had identified the problem as excessive blowout thru the vent. My early days with my 2120 were during Covid so it was not easy to work with the dealer to resolve, I just lived with the oily mess. This year I was determined to fix the problem. The dealer was not helpful since the warranty had expired. Because I was otherwise very happy with the machine, I took the extreme measure of trading it in on a new GR2120. No problems now so I am convinced I (and you) had dud gearboxes.

To Lmichael, I agree the specified lube is really thin. Other equipment I have with right angle gear boxes use 90W but they are all cast iron. The Kubota service manager did say the new aluminum gearboxes tend to mist or blowout thru the vent but mine was much more that a bit of misting. As mentioned in my original post, half the volume had been blown out in 25 hours.
