GR2100 Steering Seal

Yesterday I was doing an oil change on my GR2100 diesel and found a small oil leak around the seal where the steering column enters the front differential. I looked online and found a new seal for $5.00. I looked at the diagram and it appears as though the seal can be replaced from the outside without disassembling the entire front end. Has anyone done this? I've got about 415 hours on this and it is a 2005 model. I was a bit shocked when I did a Google search with the issues on this glidesteer system. I did have the broken cable issue but otherwise this tractor has been great. I use it to mow about 6 acres with no issues.

I guess no one has done this before but let us know how you make out with the repair as there are more than a few guys that have a similar tractor good luck!

Still waiting for the seal to arrive. I'll let you know how it goes.

The steering column does not connect to your front axle, this unit has hydro static steering. Do you mean where the drive shaft connects to the pinion shaft on the front differential?

Yes it is a drive shaft. Has a small boot over the shaft where it connects to the differential.

Yesterday I decided to replace the seal. The new seal had a plastic housing and was the type that can be replaced by pressing it in to the housing from the outside. The repair was actually very easy. I pulled off the boot from the drive shaft, pulled out the single 10mm bolt holding the drive shaft on to the spindle and pulled the shaft off the spindle.

I then used a pointed screw driver and very carefully worked it under the lip of the old seal. Since the front differential is aluminum I was very careful not to nick or scar the housing so the seal would hold.

When I pulled out the old seal the spring that holds the rubber tight to the shaft was off the seal and I fished it out off the shaft.

I then replaced the old seal by pushing it on the shaft and seating it in the housing with a large deep socket and a small hammer. It took a bit to get it to line up. Since the seal housing was plastic I had to be very gentle to get it seated.

Whole job took less than 30 minutes. Did a trial mow and checked for leakage. Seems to be working just fine.

THANKS for sharing that. I have several customers who have the GR2100's and now the 2110's so that is info that I can use.

Big issues with the 2100's were transmission leaks and then PTO clutch failures. And of course glide steer cables. Aside from that, and getting used to how the glide steer system works, I think they're cool mowers. I had an opportunity to buy one for $300, needed engine overhaul (ran, but low compression on center cylinder), had 158 hours on it, looked brand new except the radiator and screen was plugged (overheated). I passed, because of the nightmare transmission. It worked out well because the dealer I was working for, they used a wholesale company to buy the trade-in's, and the wholesaler offered $1500 for it as it was after I told him I wasn't interested in it.

I've got about 350 hours on mine and I did have the cable issue. They were replaced with the new kit by the dealer (not under warranty). I do need to do a minor adjustment to them as I notice the steering jumps a bit when I turn sharp to the left. Any thoughts on how to adjust them?
