I suspect the tracking may be done by the network mast triangulation rather than from a gps reciever because the gps receiver can be turned off.

Does the specs for you smart new piece of hardware say it has a GPS or or is GSM enabled like some ipads?

Google laptop tracking software.
That should do it for you and the grand kids.

Problem is the 13 grand kids are going to be smarter then Skeets with opertaion of a laptop and I'm sure they'll find the GPS and disable it. My adivse is keep it out of sight and out of mind.

The product you are looking for is called LoJack. It tracks a computer and is completely hidden inside the computer so it cannot be turned off.

Visit http://www.lojack.com/pages/laptop.aspx for more information.

It is $60 a year for the guaranteed service.

Skeets, do what I do. Hide the good one and let them use the old one. We've got 16 grandkids, 3 laptops and an iPad, and they use the oldest puter or nothing else. Of course, Gma let's them use hers a lot of the time and then I get to try and figure out what the little hooligans did to it . To what Eric said, the little turds do know a lot more about them than me, that's the reason they use the old one or Gma's.

Here's hoping you find a way to outsmart them, if you do, pass it on!

Almost all laptops have a small hole in one side that is used to attach a cable lock. That can turn it into a desktop computer that won't walk away. That solves the where the heck did it go problem.
The other problem of what the heck did they do to it is best solved by making a separate user account for them to use and never ever telling them the password for your account.

If you are searching in/around your home try this:
Most Laptops have bluetooth. If not get a USB adapter, they are very small.
Let the bluethooth be activated when the laptop is switched on.
Because nearly every cell-phone has bluetooth and bluethooth is short distance, just walk around and you will find it by getting near its location. 10 yards or so.

If the laptop should leave your property, it's tricky.
For gps it needs to "see" the sky, inside another house difficult. Best way is to get a kind of spy-software. Should be freeware somewhere. Everytime the Laptop is opened the camera takes a picture and sent ist next time it has internet with an email to you. It should be easy to recognize the person or the room, if it is family. Ah, and don't tell him/her how you figured it out, otherwise next time is the camera taped...

edit:
Snuko cost 15$ per year and can do that job.
