I Googled Pulmonary Fibrosis this morning and I really need to get serious about a respirator for welding and grinding. I spent many years working as a welder, and in addition and have done hundreds of welding projects with many more still ahead of me, but I've never worn a respirator. 😖

The type of work you do and where you work or live could be the cause or part of the cause for pulmonary fibrosis. Having continuous or repeated contact with toxins or pollutants — substances that harm the quality of water, air or land — can damage your lungs, especially if you do not wear protective gear. Examples include:
  • Silica dust.
  • Asbestos fibers.
  • Hard metal dusts.
  • Wood, coal and grain dusts.
  • Mold.
  • Bird and animal droppings.

Seeing that you've posted is like music to my ears, Dan. It's wonderful to learn that you are progressing well and that the pain is minimal. Or are you just a tough "Old Hokie?" :) As others have said, try not to rush things. Spring is just around the corner and worth waiting for. I'll continue to pray for your complete recovery and for the ability to enjoy puttering around once again.

Best wishes to you and a speedy recovery. Do your PT like they prescribe, that’s the key to success I have found from my personal experiences from my surgeries.

By all means use PPE. Trust me we have examined all of those environmental paths and ruled them out. I am officially classed as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis - idiopathic = unknown origin.

It seems likely severe acid reflux from my hiatel hernia has been contributory if not causal. Thats why it has to be repaired ASAP.

This is a bit concerning for me since I also have a hiatel hernia and have suffered from sever acid reflux since I was a teenager. I have seen many doctors, tried many different diets, and nothing works to resolve it. I have been on daily meds for it most of my life now.

I know that well. Omeprazol OTC was a wonder drug for me and eliminated all the symptoms but the hernia continued to increase in size. It reached the point I could only eat tiny portions. Have you discussed surgical repair with your doctors? I am told robotic surgery (fundiplication) is mininimally invasive and very successful.

I can certainly relate to that because I was suffering from the eating problem, too. I had to be very careful the size of food bites I would take, especially meats, as they would get stuck in my throat and sit there for quite a while. You couldn't even take a drink to help wash it down because it would sit on top of the food and not go down either. 3 years ago I had my esophagus widened and that fixed it. But it's only a matter of time before that issues comes back. I work for one of the top medical schools in the nation and many of my faculty are medical doctors. I think it's time I investigate this a little more.

I too suffered with Gerd and a fairly large hiatal hernia for over 30 years. Had been on the max doses of meds and was still suffering with breakthrough and was loosing my voice. Was recommended to see a specialist by my gastroenterologist doc back in early 2021. They repaired the hernia in my diaphragm and placed a LINX device in place of my lower esophageal valve which was not working. Told me to stop taking the drugs the day after the surgery which scared the begeebees out of me as I had been so miserable for years. No heartburn since, which still seems weird 4 years later. Not everyone is a candidate, good insurance is a must as it is not a cheap surgery.

I had to lookup that LINX device. Clever idea - must make goung through airport security interesting. My repair will be a more traditional fundiplication where they pull the stomach back then wrap and suture the top of the stomach around that same area to tighten the valve.

You get to carry a medical implant card which is helps sometimes, Every now and then you get one of those TSA folks that is having a bad day which results in a very thorough pat down. I will say that I would do it again tomorrow, so much relief with just a touch of dysphagia if I eat too fast.

Never have heard of this but I am going to look into having this done. I have tried many times to get off the medicine with no luck.
