I have rewired the entire machine completely and did away with the combination box in the process.
Added more fused circuits than Kubota had.
Almost zero chance the starter engaged on it's own.
It looked to be the original 29 year old starter to me.
I think fatigue allowed an internal hot wire to fail causing a direct short.
I guess I'm lucky it didn't blow the battery up.
