I have a G1800 (1000 hours) , the other day it would not turn off so after reading some posts here I pushed the solenoid lever in to cut the fuel and it shut down. It now will not start and the solenoid appears to have gone back to normal placement. Tractor has a new battery and cables. I checked the fuses and all seems normal. When I turn the key, I get lights on the dash and I hear a only a fluttering sound from under the seat, when I turn to start the fluttering continues but at a different tempo. I am considering replacing the solenoid as I am guessing something internally may be stuck but am looking for guidance as this one really has me stumped. I'd be happy to at least get it running before my yard reaches critical mass.

I would guess the fluttering noise is the fuel pump - 100% normal.

The lack of engine shutoff followed by no engine crank sounds like a bad electrical connection, safety switch, fuse, and/or relay. You need to do some electrical diagnosis before buying any parts.

But you may be able to get it running by moving the solenoid to the run position and cranking the tractor. You may have to restrain the solenoid in the run position or remove it to keep things running.

I am assuming that your engine is cranking fine just not starting (firing cylinders) and running due to lack of fuel.

No, I’m not even getting the engine to crank, just the fuel pump clicking
Thats what I understood you to say. You do not have a fuel shutoff solenoid problem. You have an electrical issue that is affecting multiple systems. The starting circuit might be the easist place to start.

That is NOT what I understood from your original post but that is a completely different problem than I addressed in my response.

Start at the battery and see where you have good voltage. You should probably use a voltage drop test to see if the voltage holds steady from battery or is being restricted.

This link explains the test.

The starter is controlled by the combination box. This also controls the shutdown solenoid. Since you said both are not working I would suspect the combination box or its power supply (12V or ground) being the problem. It is located on the left side of the engine block and has a round 12 pin connector (only 11 pins used).

You mentioned all fuses are fine. Does this also include the fuseable link?
