My fuel tank is leaking on my M7040. Does this suggest a punctured tank? Loose or leaking fitting? How would I go about removing the tank, which I assume I'll have to do. Any help appreciated.

Get the WSM (Work Shop Manual, aka Service manual), it will give you all the steps needed.
In order to get the right WSM for your model you will need to know the serial# and the exact model.
If you give me the serial # I should be able to narrow down the exact model and WSM # that you need.

The bottom may be rusting through if it is older and steel. I fixed mine with an epoxy kit and so far so good for seven months.

I'm not familiar with the epoxy kit. Is this something I'd purchase at a local hardware store? Also, does the tank still need to be removed to use the kit, or is it used while the tank is still on the tractor? Thanks.

Can you post some pictures of where the leak is? With pictures you may get ideas on a simple repair. Could be a hose leak, more so then a rust through, but who knows?

You ask if you have to remove the tank for an epoxy repair...well if you can't actually see the spot the leak is originating from...you've got to find it somehow!

I'll try to upload a picture. It's dripping right behind what appears to be a cross brase under the tray that the tank sits in. There are 3 bolts right where the drip is showing up (a 14mm bolt with two 12mm bolts on either side of it).

Search rusted fuel tank repair
Yes you remove tank and coat entire interior surface by rotating tank to flow epoxy around
Read about it on web search for Caswell (epoxy) or Por 15 (more like paint) sites

Thanks Wolfman for the link form the manual. Well, after scanning the manual it stated that the fuel tank is plastic, which I suppose I should have checked to begin with. It in fact is plastic, so that takes rust out of the equation. Any ideas what else might be leaking? My mechanical skills are marginal, but I'm guessing I should check the fuel drain plug itself next. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've replaced the fuel tank on my M7040....ran a stick thru the front of it.

Dealer says the tire has to come off to get it out....they are wrong.
It's a pita to get out, but it's a matter of just removing stuff a bit at a time. The metal is a plate that protects the bottom of it.

You should be able to trace the leak back. The material the tank is made out of is the type, it's either got a hole or not....pin holes I doubt. So to me if the leak is small,it's one of the fittings.

It looks like you might be able to reach up to where you took the picture. If so, wipe it all clean with paper towels, and without starting the tractor just let it be for a while to see if diesel shows up. Try to isolate exactly where the fuel is coming from.

If you can't come to some determination, you will have to remove the tank to inspect. It may be a crack in the plastic from weight of fuel, age, and vibration.

Ok, so I drained the tank, but can't find anywhere in the WSM where it gives step by step on how to remove it. It appears to have two straps across it - one at the rear and one near the drain plug. There are 4 bolts underneath in the metal pan. Are these screwed into some fitting in the tank; and should I remove them? Where does the fuel line enter the tank? If anyone would be so kind as to give a willing, but guy with marginal mechanical skills some tips I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks.
