I'm beginning to see reports of idiots drilling gas tanks. There was one reported today locally. However, the victim caught the dolt on her security camera. Not that repercussions are likely.

I thought the same thing. This seems very dangerous to me.
Even if a tank is plastic the drill sparks a lot.

Most cordless tools today have brushless motors. The switch is a low amp, low voltage potentiometer that control a PWM circut. Nearly 100% safe. Not like the old Sears plug in drills of 1964 that showered sparks!

Back in the 70's gas scam, thieves had just a smidgen of ambition and used ice picks on the thin steel tanks. The current crop are just plain lazy.

I used to work in a beryllium factory. Never grind it or melt it without proper masks. N 95 are not enough. in its solid form it is fine. I’ve even showed friends it’s safe by licking it. BE copper is in more than you think, everything from circuit boards to ping golf clubs.
You are correct that it’s a non ferrous material that does not spark. Hence the reason to use on oil rigs.

Its funny, I used to leave my car running when I stop at the gas station to grab beer on my way home. Now I take the keys out couple years ago nobody would steal a 2005 Ford Focus

I can pretty much bet you that boat sales will go down drastically. I cannot imagine (and don't want to) filling my now-sold Cape Horn 27 with 175 gallons, averaging about 2.3 mpg. When going to our out fishing spots we were burning about 25 gph, or $150 per hour at a very conservative $6 a gallon on the water.

Just another sector of the economy to be hit--boats, on water places for boats and those that service them.

If the price of fuel stays high long enough folks will break down and electric powered vehicles, mowers, blowers, tractors....everything will be the cure. And folks will be glad to have it, and the government will be happy and in control!

We will have forgotten the price of materials to make the electric society function, including disposing of all the things that will wear out.

My brother races modifieds or bombers on a dirt track and has just recently added a second car. These aren't the stripped down throw a roll cage in.. he's got a lot of money in them! This is going to put the hurts on him for sure, probably won't be able to race for points this year.. just the fun of it.. which is all fun anyways!

Wonder how much this will affect NASCAR if any.. I know their rich but prices could really go North!
