Hi, the other day I started my L3901 up and the fuel gauge showed empty. I thought maybe someone had emptied my tank. Nope I filled the tank and it still says empty. Not sure if its the gauge or the sending unit in the tank. The fuses are all good. When i start the tractor, the gauge goes to the full make and drops right back to empty. Is there a way to check my sending unit and besides pulling the hood off to get to the tank are the units hard to replace? Thanks in advance

First check simple stuff. Wire disconnected or chewed by mice.

From this WSM:

L3130 · L3430 · L3830 · L4630 · L5030, WSM

Likely very similar

Bruce, can you look in your fuel tank and see anything? Maybe you need one of those cheap borescopes! Sounds like something is causing the float to be caught on something so the resistor on the sending unit can't move.

Harbor Fright, 50 bucks. I use the heck out of mine and they even come in a fitted case.

I have an L3300 about 20 yrs old. The fuel gauge has NEVER worked properly. the tractor is very economical on fuel so i have to check fuel level every once in a while thru fill cap
this unit operates extremely well all year, used mainly for hay moving and snow blowing/pushing. I would recommend this style tractor to anyone

My BX never shows full either, it reads full at start up then always goes down one bar and works correctly from there.

My buddy in Maine has a Deere with a busted fuel gauge. He uses a stick to check the fuel level. It never breaks, is always accurate and can be used for kindling if the need arises.:D

I have the opposite problem. My fuel gauge always shows full. I forgot to tell the dealer when I took it in for service last time. I just deal with it.
