Fuel fungicide treatment

I decided to start treating my diesels fuel for water/ fungus abatement.
This product: FPPF 00119 KILLEM BIOCIDE 16 OZ. BOTTLE is super concentrated.
The bottle label isn't much help is how to measure the additive .
If you use this additive here as the amount to add:

2.5 oz to 100 gal = 5 U.S.Tablespoons
1.25 oz to 50 gal = 2.5 U.S. Tablespoons
0.625 oz to 25 gal = 3.75 U.S. teaspoons
0.312 oz to 12 gal = 1.8 teaspoons
0.156 oz to 6 gal = 1 teaspoon

After treating my fuel…. I took a clean mason-jar…and drained fuel (from the sump-drain of my storage-tank) into the jar…put a lid on it…and set it in a dark place……so I can check on it 6 mos later.

You might be surprised at what can grow in diesel…. even with a biocide.

"BIOBOR JF" seems to be the most commonly found biocide for diesel fuel.

Most of the oil companies (fuel oil) that we sell to use this product. They use one container per 275 gallon tank fill.

I use Soltron and I've never had a issue, I've had 250 gallons stored for 2 years without any growth.

Drain about a cup of fuel from the Bottom of your storage tank….into a mason-jar…it should be clear or dyed fuel but clean…. If not, you’ve already got problems. If clean, …. put a lid on it …and store it in a shaded place for a year….Then look at it. Does it have a dark “mass” or “blob” sitting in the bottom of the jar..??

If so, your fuel treatment is faulty.

More than you wanted to know response from personal experience in fire trucks.

A couple of years ago we started using Bio Kleen (Power Sevice) available locally at our auto parts store as it was the only brand available off the shelf. I followed the manufacturer's recommendations for the maintenance dose as at that time we were not having issues but on the recommendation of a local farmer who warned me of the issues with biodiesel and bacteria.

Two years later we had two trucks that developed issues and needless to say the maintenance dose wasn't enough or else didn't work. One truck required a new injector pump and the other injector replacement that was blamed on bad fuel. Both trucks has 80-100 gallon tanks and the diesel basically sat as the trucks were not run enough to cycle the fuel.

I have swapped to Killem and use it at the strongest dose listed on the bottle. Bio Kleen may have worked had I added enough of it but right now Killem seems to be working. We spent over $16,000 in repairs total on both trucks and needless to say it was all because of bacteria in the tank that passed thru both filters and made its way to the pump and injectors.

Moral of the story is don't store an excessive amount of fuel in the tank and treat what is there. The tanks had black crud coating the tanks that had to be removed and cleaned all due to biodiesel. We never had this issue to deal with before we were forced to use biodiesel based on availability of real fuel.

If you have black growing in your tanks, better clean them out or be prepared to change pumps and injectors as we even rigged up a pump to circulate fuel once the tank was treated in an attempt to filter it out without success. I am not sure how the shop cleaned the tanks as they referred to the process of boiling it out but they came back clean but only after we let it damage the pump and injectors.

I use Red Star active dry yeasties to keep things from growing in the fuel/water boundary layer.

I've used BIO-KLEEN for the last two years without issue. However, I noticed that the bottle I have actually froze over the winter in my garage. Now it looks like there was phase separation after it thawed. There is a very heavy wax like substance in the bottom of the bottle now.

I'll be looking for something else now and certainly wouldn't recommend BIO-KLEEN.

Are you folks adding this stuff to your tractor tanks or storage tanks? have 90 hours on my BX1880. I use the power service (white bottle) in the winter to keep from jelling. Appreciate any guidance. Thanks.

I too am surprised that any product marketed as a fuel biocide, would actually freeze in the bottle.

Biobor JF was specified for use in our company’s jet aircraft and storage tanks. (and approved of by Rolls-Royce the engine mfr’s.)… gotta be OK for an asian diesel, heh?
