My John Deere has gone into forced retirement, Kubota B2650 moving into John's stall. John drank gas, but his replacement drinks diesel. :):):)

New to diesel. What is the best fuel to avoid problems, and should anything be added to the fuel?

PS For you non-military types. My log on spelled out is "19th Special Forces Battalion".

I like Stabil All Season Diesel additive.
My dad likes Power Service diesel additive.
Our neighbor likes Howes additives.
A guy at church likes Hotshots.

Point being, there are several good brands out there and just like tractors and trucks everyone has an opinion.

Project Farm has a video comparing several brands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8gDN_6esfs

I use hot shots in my truck and have considered adding it to my Kubota, but the thought/time/happen to be standing next to the shelf in the garage with the additive haven't happened at the same time yet.

Agree with the above. I use Power Service, only because it's readily available.

Additionally, I started adding a biocide year 'round.

Just like the other additives, many options.

Again I use Power Service, but I often see Soltron (not Startron) as a favorite.

I have read that today's Diesel fuel is formulated with everything that is needed.

That's probably true, but I still squirt 2 oz. of Stanadyne into each 5 gallon jug of Diesel.

I've heard - speculation, nothing factual to back it up - that today's ultra-low sulfar diesel lacks the lubricity needed to keep pumps and other moving fuel components properly lubricated, which drives the additives market. It's similar to when lead was reduced/removed from gasoline and engines started having wear issues until they figured out how to compensate for the new fuel blends.

Refiners add lubricity additives at the loading rack today to compensate for the lack of Sulfur (lubricant) in the fuel. been doing that for a long time now. I use 'snake oil' as well (Powerservice) but in realty if you run fresh diesel, all is good except in sub freezing temps, then you need an additive to prevent jelling.

Your money, not mine... Choose wisely, some 'snake oil' is more expensive than others. More of a 'feel good' thing than anything else.

If your close to the water or have normally high humidity, a biocide/ algaecide additive is highly recommended in the tractor and any stored fuel.

I use Soltron (not startron), you can get it at napa auto parts or online.

On fuel get it from a station that sells a lot of diesel like a truck stop. Small mom and pop places may not sell much and you'll stand a better chance of old or contaminated fuel.

Amsoil all in one is my favorite additive.
