i have a b1750 and can't disengages the front wheel drive. any ideas, mike
Try turning the wheel back and forth while taking it out of 4 wheel drive. Not sure if this will help, but it works on mine.

Welcome to OTT. Sorry that a problem brought you here, but hopefully you will find this a great place to spend time. There are great people here.
When you say that it won't come out of 4WD, can you explain your circumstances more?
Typically, when using a tractor in 4WD, you get what's called driveline windup. When turning, the front tires travel a different arc than the back tires, and because the front is mechanically linked to the back, tension builds up. That is why, when turning tight, one of the tires, usually an inside tire, will spin a little- the surface that the tire is on gives before something breaks. Because of this, it is often necessary to reverse direction to disengage 4WD. This actually unwinds that tension built up in the driveline. Without knowing your circumstances, I don't know if your problem is this simple. Have you always owned the tractor? Is it possible that the tires aren't correct for the tractor, and the rotational difference is keeping it bound up?
Sometimes, when a 4WD hasn't been used in a long time, things get stiff, and are hard to engage and disengage. I don't know if that is your case.
And sometimes, things break internally. Perhaps it won't disengage because it can't. It may be that the transmission has to be opened up- hopefully that isn't the case.
I don't know if this has been helpful, but any further information that you could give would be helpful in working towards a diagnosis.

I have had my L245DT and my L235 get "stuck". Try shifiting trans into neutral and let the machine roll back a little if you were going forward or forward if you were going backwards.
Once you get it into 2 wheel drive check the tires to make sure sizes are correct and air pressure is up.

Go fwd in a straight line for 5 ft, stop, shift into reverse, put pressure on 4wd lever pulling to 2wd, just slight pressure. While holding this pressure, let out clutch and move backwards, 4wd will disengage in 1 to 2 ft. If it dosen't, something is wrong.

This will sound a little crazy, but I bought a B6100D from a guy who thought it was stuck in 4wd, but it turned out to be a rusted detent ball and spring on the shift lever. He finally pulled the lever hard enough that it twisted and the detent ball came out. Then the lever would not stay up in 2wd because the detent ball was gone and it kept dropping down into 4WD. So he thought he was stuck in 4WD when really the problem was the detent ball and spring. Once I repaired the shift lever, freed the spring and replaced the detent ball, all was well. I am not familiar with the B1750, but I thought you might want to check and see if this weird incident may have occurred on yours.

Here are a couple of pictures showing what I was dealing with. The first shows the twisted lever with the "frozen with rust" spring. The second shows the shaft for the lever and the wallowed out holes for the detent ball to hold the lever in either of its two positions.

Good Luck,
John in VA

OK, dumb question: why would you ever take it out of four wheel drive? The select lever on mine has broken off, so I need to get it welded back on, but don't see any urgency.

If you run it on pavement it can blow out the front drive.
Or, at least break a u-joint. At worst, break something in the transmission. If there was no reason to disengage them, why engineer them to be taken in and out of 4WD?

I agree with sledge,

Both my L245DT and the B7100 are always in 4 wheel drive, but our property is very hilly (all 7 acres and I mow all of it) so I am always in 4 wd (no pavement though). Next step this winter is to install power steering on the L245DT with FEL and backhoe, then the L7100 HST because I am building FEL for it.

Love this site and the folks on it.

Plus there's the problem of, if you are in 2WD then get stuck you have 4WD to get you out. You get stuck while in 4WD, you are stuck till you get a pulling vehicle.
