Hi All, I have a 1990 M7030 with 4 wheel drive, lately I've begun to notice a bit of a clunking noise coming from the front end. It's worse when in 4 wheel drive. Is it common to top up the gear oil on the front 2 wheel housings? Should I even replace the gear oil in each side? What is the best oil to use if I replace the oil? Thank you.

The WSM is scare on details but at the pivot point of the 4WD front axle there is an adjustment screw and lock nut.
No details are provided but that would be the first place I would liik for slop causing noise.
I will leave it to others to advise on oils. This info is usually in an Operators' Manual.

First and simplest thing to check, is to check that the lug nuts are still tight. A lose wheel will make a clunking noise.

Make sure it is not something simple like a stick stuck behind the wheel. I would jack up the front end and methodically check that everything is tight. Check the lug nuts, pto u-joints and splines, ball joints and steering components.
Everything in Dave_eng's photo spins (no lockin/out hubs) all the time. It is not under power until the 4wd is engaged. Since you say it makes noise in 2wd I would look hard at the external stuff firs.
