Tree limb fractured off zerk fitting on tie rod. Seems to be hardened steel. Have attempted to drill out to fit larger easy out but no luck. Any suggestions for extraction and replacement of this unprotected grease fitting?

An easy out should be an easy solution. If you are having trouble drilling it, you might need a better bit.

Yep... what he said. Go to Harbor Freight, and get the left handed drill set. It will take it right out as it starts to cut. I've replaced a bunch on my ATV's that way.
