I don’t know what his arrangements are, but foresters never bid any woods work by hourly rates. It’s always “per acre.” We’ve been around the block a few times working with many contractors.
That’s what contractors would prefer. We just tell them to give us a per acre bid or we move on to the next contractor. They are given opportunities to walk the job area before formulating their bid.
$200 per hour Canadian. They have two Skidsteers with drum mulchers. Approx. 5 acres. Thinks it can be done in a day, with that said lots of large trees just having him clear out the old stumps, and under brush mainly.

Hell, I'd jump on that. I got a $4,000 quote for 6 acres. Leaving everything that is still standing. It's thick underbrush and fallen trees though. Lots of good wood still standing and its tight. Hills and a creek too. I would love to have that section thinned out, but that's a bit steep for a "want".
...and ALWAYS take photos of EVERYTHING when the machine arrives and when it departs...

I used to do that with rental cars. Till this one bachelor party weekend in the outer banks. Then, I was invited to never rent from Enterprise again.
Recently I returned a rental and got a $150 "cleaning fee" tacked on my bill. I sent them photos of the machine prior to pick up and asked them to please explain. They reversed the charge.
Rental insurance doesn't cover additional costs like fuel and cleaning mud out of the tracks prior to hauling down the road. All the places I deal with explicitly say they charge up to $500 cleaning fees and $5/L for fuel for machines returned dirty or empty.
I have had that too. Thankfully I had before and after photos. It was cleaner when I returned it. Well, video because I was recording the work.
