Any one of those should help with heavy maintenance (motor removal, FEL removal, etc).

Do you plan to split your tractor? I am not sure a crane will help too much.

In my dream shop I'll have post in each corner with I-beams running end to end. A cross beam on trolleys that can be moved from front to back and hoist on a trolley that can be moved side to side. No loss of floor space and the ability to pick up and move something from any point in the shop.

Now if I can just figure out how to pay for all this crap.

I have an A frame crane like your first pick at work. Rated for 2 ton with an electric hoist. Makes it really nice tearing something apart. And being able to hit a button to lift or lower makes it really handy.

I don't really care for the cherry pickers (pics 2 and 4). They are handy for pulling a motor or lighter stuff. But even with only 500 lbs hanging off it, they can be a bear to move.

With the A frame crane, I've moved 2,000 lbs by myself without to much effort getting the crane to roll. Just take it slow or it can get away from you with that much weight on it ;)

For your average user a cherry picker is suitable. I have one and i use it often. It will lift 2000 lbs plus in short boom, 1000 stretched out. I have had the need for a gantry on several occasions, but my shop is way too small for one.
Was planning a crane mounted to floor and ceiling but funds and time were at a premium at the time of the pour.

I have a 20 foot stick of I-beam, Trolly and 2 Ton Hoist
it hung from the ceiling in the old shop.
The new shop has rafters so I'll have to go you're route
and I'll have to put posts into the floor,
haven't gotten that far yet but can't wait.

Telaga,

Another common name for the black floor crane is an "engine hoist." These are most commonly used to hoist out an engine and often the transmission (tranny) as well. Some of the Chinese models are pretty well put together and it would be hard to beat their prices on a good quality model.

It sounds like you want to build a gantry crane of your own. While I admire ingenuity, a crane is a serious item that really needs to be engineered to withstand the structural loads it will bear. If I were you, I would buy one, even used, from a reputable maker. You can always paint it!

I have an engine hoist. Big limitation is that the front legs must be able to go underneath whatever you are lifting which can be a hassle when trying to use it for other tasks. A friend borrowed mine to remove the engine from an original Austin Mini which was on a scissor lift. The legs had no where to go underneath because of the scissor lift. He turned the legs around so they were sticking out backwards and then piled bags of salt on the legs to serve as a counter weight. The engine only weighed a few hundred # so it worked ok.
In the photo my son and I are raising a 600# anchor off the bottom of the river to relocate it using the engine hoist. We had to drill a hole in the middle of the raft to have the hoist pull in the right spot.
Sorry the picture is too big requiing scrolling to see all the text

That seems like the hard way to do it, even Mini's with the hydrolastic suspension, the easiest way was to just drop the sub-frame.
A handful of bolts and the wiring going to the cab, then two guys pick up the
front of the body and wheel it away from the sub-frame / engine / trans-axle.

How much for the one in the first pic? I would mount a cheap Chinese electric winch on it. Remembering that you rarely lift really heavy components and that would do most I expect. (Wish I had one!)
EDIT: 3rd pic shows a lighter gantry in background

They got some good prices on a 2000lb crane. Realistically in my garage it would probably be around 500 to 1000lbs.

Here's some options through northern tool.

We are old guys of 70+ years.
Had to put car on scissor lift because we could not bend over to work on it:)

17 or 70 original minis were fun as hell.
I test drove one of the new BMW minis when they first came out
no comparison really sad British Leyland sold that Mark to them
I had two of them and a Mini Moke,
which was like a little Jeep version.

If I could have only kept all my cars OMG
