Flat screen TV in a cold garage/shop

Any of you guys have a flat screen tv in your cold garage or shop? I have a big flat screen I want to put in our 30' x 40' garage that is not heated in the winter. I have heard both ways , yes and no. Just wondering what some of you have experienced. Thanks

I don’t think it will hurt from sitting in there. It’s common for people to store tvs in storage lockers even in cold climates, and we personally had one tv sit over the Winter and it got down below 0 F here. When taken out, it worked fine. That’s a small sample, but it did work.

However, tvs do have operating temperatures, so if you are worried, just don’t use it until the temperature is warmed up in the building either by you or nature.

Have 40" wall mounted unit in upstairs loft works anytime I use it. If I plan to be out in loft for awhile. I'll fire up a propane heater. FWIW, have small PC running 24x7 connected to TV. Remote controlled TV's are never off, just in a low power state.

I just put an Raspberry Pi computer in my unheated shop a couple of weeks ago with a 21" ASUS monitor and it works just fine. It's the same technology as the screens in cars that get really cols setting out in the winter. Shouldn't be a problem.

i placed an older 32" samsung in the kubota shed last summer - and no problems, 32 over the air channels too. I only really look at it if I am working on something at the workbench and most of the time it is just listening to it!

But cold should not be a problem.

I’m facing this issues as well. My plan was to have heat and insulation by now, but life happens and it’s put off for another year.

from the research I’ve done, the big issue is as the tv warms up, it creates condensation within the circuits and can over time cause corrosion and premature failure. The thing I always think of is gas station pumps with led displays that play commercials as you pump gas. They seem to only last a little while before they begin to fail, and usually don’t work as well in the winter.

having said that. I am putting one on the spring and if it’s an issue before I get heat in there, I just wont use it in the winter.

Like others have said, Cold is not really an issue, condensation is the issue.
They actually sell TV's that are weather rated, they withstand the condensation issues.

I put a small LED TV in my garage a few years ago. Has always worked and it can get cold out there. I figured for < $100 I paid for it, it was worth the risk.

I have an LCD tv on our screened porch. It’ll go out in a couple weeks when the pollen is done. It gets brought back in the house the first 32 degrees in the fall. I’ve always heard the liquid inside them will freeze. I don’t know but never took the chance.
