In the interest of fairness/decency, I would think that EA would at least offer to pay for the part that you had to buy.
The pre-approval story, in my opinion, is just BS .

I agree or at least, replace the defective coupler so you have a spare in the event that you have problems in the future.

Just grinding a shallow crescent shape on each of the inside faces of that clamp, makes it a very effective coupler slide opening/holding tool.
