re: why not use tractor hydraulics....

one big reason is 'compatabilty' . Not all tractors have '10GPM, 3500PSI' remotes on them but....3PH and 540 PTO are virtually 'universal'.

2nd problem , could be oil contamination...say 2-3 different tractors use the same poopickerupper... red oil from tractor A gets mixed into blue oil of B and then grn oil of C... never a good idea to 'cross contaminate' oils...

Road apples reminds me of a story my mother, now 95 tells, about her father in the 1930's - 40's rushing out into the street when the horses of the carriages they were pulling would defecate, opps sorry shit in the street. Apparently there was quite a rush of the neighbourhood to collect it for their roses. Oh the British and their gardens.
The good old days with horse shit in the streets...nobody rushed in to pick up then
