Renting has become a bit of a 'scam'. 'Daily' price is based on you having it 24 hrs, BUT only 8 hours on the machine. At least that's how Home depot Canada do it.
And thats rain or shine!

People often say this but my guess is that they don't rent excavators much afterwards. You need a "project" to make renting make sense.

There is great convenience in having the tool available to do many of the small things that will come up, which you WILL NOT do if the tool is not handy.

Not questioning the decision really, money is money, and all that. Just saying that for 20 years I never regretted buying a backhoe with my tractor...but a couple years ago did buy and old mini ex and find it is even better. Yep don't need either as I could rent when needed. But then I would never rent, because it is not worth it for the little things I do, or the time I have available to do them.
This 100% 👆

It's certainly no secret that I am a YUGE backhoe fan, I have found so many uses for it that I never thought of before I had one, it's crazy.

They are a lot of money, but worth it IMHO.

I rented a mini-x one time. It was a very nice machine and it worked great, but having to go pick it up, do the paperwork, hook it up, then offload it, (use it for 5 hours) then clean it, load it back up, drive it back, wait for them to offload it, and inspect it, then go to the counter and get my cleaning deposit back and sign some more paper work........ARRGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

"F" it, just give me my own backhoe for 10K. I use it when I want, for however long I want, and I clean it when I want.

According to my un-scientific poll, most people that own one, do not regret their purchase.

OK I will pipe in here, dont let anyone dissuade you from the BX series! First off they aint just a fancy lawn mower, they are a working tractor! My 2360 has done a lot of amazing things Im sure it was never meant to do. I use her to pull fire wood out of the woods, pushed more snow and gravel that I car to think about, reclaimed a little over 5 acers of, wild roses, wild grape vines and weeds that God and 2 other people have ever seen. And thats with the push blade and a MMM. Like some one said they will do the job, just not as fast as the bigger tractors. Now my BX is getting a little long inthe tooth, and I got a deal on a B2601 FEL, grapple and MMM. I wont put it down but had I to do it again, nope it just aint what I needed. I would have gone with the LX. But trust me, your BX will do just about anything you want to do as long as you remember,,,, it is a little tractor and not a 988

Heck, you did all that with a little BX2360? I did all that with a JD X739. That thing was a dang back saver for sure. Then I wanted to lift, dig and carry. The JD salesman pissed me off, so I bought Orange.

I also was p'd off by the two JD salesmen. Standing there smokin and drinking coffee. Maybe I showed up too early? They didn't seem interested in selling me a tractor just kept chatting between themselves. The only thing they did say is they would never buy a tractor BH with only 23 HP! Meaning dont buy Kubota? So 10 more minutes up the road and the Kubota sales guy and I took off in a Kubota 4 wheel dump bed and he showed me my new tractor! Its 6 years and almost 800 hours later this Oct and no regrets!

Thanks very much for all the good advice. Im giving up the backhoe just because its such a huge added expense and it will be cheaper to just rent an excavator when i need it. I feel great about the deal I'm getting on a L2501 that's the last one on the lot with all the attachments I'll need as well as the trim and tilt.
Having the BH greatly increases what you can do with a tractor.

Just to add to Trimley's thought, I've heard it is actually cheaper to get the BH when you buy the tractor originally.

Supposedly when they are putting it together from the factory, there is a time savings due to them not having to R&R certain things like wheels and such.

Not sure if it's true, but it sounds logical.

I believe that it's always dealer installed - it doesn't come from the factory already installed.

I think it's easier to finance when you originally buy. And adding a new BH to an old tractor is a poor financial decision usually. But adding a BH a year or two after buying the tractor I don't think is materially more expensive.
