One of the biggest things that new tractor owners (including myself) failed to understand is the brakes, they are very different than say your truck or your ATV/UTV as they usually have brakes in front and rear. These tractors don't have front brakes, they only have braking in the rear, usually left and right that's why you'll see on some tractors the pedals can be split for brake steering. But when its in four wheel drive or some like to say they are called front wheel assist. When its in four wheel drive, you'll have limited braking in the front from mechanical linkage via the drive shaft to the transmission so it's important when carrying heavy loads out front to have it in four wheel drive to have that additional braking power but also if the rear comes off the ground you'll still be able to stop.....hopefully.
Like what @skeets said, they are incredible machines and can be fun to use but man they can be dangerous so it's always important to think through what you are doing and assess the risk of what could go wrong. Nobody is perfect, we all make mistakes...it's how we learn. I've made a few myself and learned from my experience but that just makes you a better operator in the end.
