Looking at a L2502 gear drive, really like it but I would need run a finish mower on it, anyone have a opinion on how bad that is going to be? Have always had live pto tractors.

FWIW, a Finish mower spins up with very little effort - unlike a rotary cutter. I can start my LP finish 5 foot finish mower at idle speed on the tractor with no bog down, but my rotary cutter requires about 1550 engine RPMs to engage the PTO.

I am not sure that answered your question.

I am more worried about the mower stopping everytime you have to clutch to change direction.

I doubt it will be much of an issue. It takes some time for my finish mower to spin down, when I turn my PTO off after I have throttled down.

I ran a finishing mower behind my older JD750 without live rear pto. But the tractor had an overrunning clutch/pto. So if you slowed down to change gears, reverse, etc......as soon as you pushed the tractor clutch in....it would disengage the mower pto. But the mower blades would still keep spinning until they completely slowed down to a stop.

Once you got used to it, you could change gears, reverse direction, etc. pretty smoothly without the mower's speed slowing down much at all. And as soon as you released the clutch again, the mower was back up to speed in no time. Not quite as ideal as a live pto.....but not that terribly bad either.

Thanks, The syncro shuttle works pretty slick on the L2502, so you would be able to shift pretty quick.

Eventhough the 02 doesn't have live pto like your 01 I don't think you'll see much difference but as bird dogger said,an overrunning clutch between tractor and mower will take care of it if necessary.

I mowed for many, many years with a B7200DT and Woods RD7200. Yes the transmission PTO works OK and you quickly learn to wait on the mower when you have to clutch.

Three years ago I bought an L3901 and the live PTO made mowing in tight areas and up against obstacles so much easier I would never go back to a transmission PTO.

JMO and YMMV,

Dan
