Finish Mower Help

Hello All: I'm new here so I appreciate the help!
I have a Kubota B2920 and I would like to get a 72" finish mower. Question is: Do you think the B2920 can handle a Woods RD-72? I will be cutting mostly 4 to 5"
high grass. Nothing heavy. Thanks for the input!!

Not sure the pto hp on you tractor? I run a 72" Behind my old TO 20 Ferguson they are only 20 hp engine hp

You have roughly 21 PTO hp....so I would expect it would do just fine in the conditions you describe. Rear Discharge mower helps also.

Keep the blades sharp and don't let the grass get too high. IF you experience any trouble (grass a little too high or a bit wet) you can take a smaller 'cut'/overlap until conditions improve, but I think you'll be fine.

I have 23 pto hp with a six foot Bush Hog RDTH72, it runs pretty easy, I could move up to a 7' footer... Your 21 pto hp, should be fine with the grass you are looking at.

The Woods manual for RD 60 and 72, recommend minimum tractor HP of 25. It does not say PTO HP. Based on my experience I’d say you should be fine with 21 PTO HP and the use you describe. I have lots of Woods attachments, they are all quality equipment.

And in this case 'heavy' too (upwards of 700 lbs.)

The OP might notice a little 'strain' IF mowing up any significant inclines (if he has any). Otherwise should be fine.

I had a B2620 with Woods RD60.
When you lift the mower it will cause the tractor front end to raise, losing steering.
With the fel in place steering was not affected.

Thanks for all of the quick replies! I do have 1 decent incline, but I usually cut it crossways, so that shouldn't be an issue. I was also wondering about the weight of the deck, but I think with the front bucket I should be fine. It also has ballast in the tires.

Some of the property is a bit uneven, so I would definitely need the anti-scalp roller

I have successfuly used a RD7200 on a B7200D for about 20 years. It cuts fine but its more weight than the B7200 can really handle. It can push the tractor around on slopes and it strains the lift but it it works.

Your B2920 has PS, an additional 10HP, 500 pounds more 3pt lift, and 500 pounds more curb weight. I would be confident the tractor is up to it. You will almost surely need some sort of front end ballast - e.g. loader or weights.

That mower is a feather on the back of my L3901.

I would expect that you will be OK in most circumstances if your ground is not too steep but don't expect miracles.

There was an interesting thread here a few years ago about a dissapointed new B2650 owner who loaded his tractor down with oversized tires/liquid ballast, FEL, and a heavy 6' three point mounted finish mower and was complaining that he needed to use low range simply to navigate his steep ground with the PTO/mower turned off. Owner simply expected too much from 20 PTO HP.

Agree that you have the HP to spin it. In my experience, weight won't be a show stopper but may be somewhat of a concern. I'd really want to stay away from needing the FEL for weight on the front. Never had a Woods, but I don't think there is anything built with higher quality. I always removed the loader for mowing except when using a bush hog. That was for balance and feeling my way through thick brush that hid concrete blocks etc.

My ford 1210 for example is happy with a 5' Caroni RFM (with a couple suitcase weights on the front). It would not tolerate a 5' LandPride that was normally used on a Kubota B7500. The suitcase weights didn't keep the front under control and it struggled on any uphill grade.

The B7500/LandPride 5' RFM combo was the limit. In hot weather, uphill and tall grass the hydro fluid got quite hot (affected the feeling of the steering). Plenty of weight without loader or suitcase weights.

L3200 handled a 6' LandPride just fine, and the current L4240 hardly knows the 7-1/2' Caroni is back there.

IIRC a RD7200 gpes a bit over 700 pounds and is a long lever arm....

I mow about 18 acres with a 72” finish mower …but I allow the mower to run along the ground on it’s own wheels…not in the air. I also never remove my FEL… so when I do lift the mower ..(such as for fast-transport not mowing)…. it doesn’t lift the front wheels. But, I also wouldn’t expect it to since my tractor is a larger M.

The day I brought it home (before adding a canopy and other things.)

For what it's worth, I don't connect the top link to my finish mower when I mow. Too many dips across my fields. Only use it when I cross the cattle guards to get all 4 wheels in the air.

It seems that some of you are concerned about the weight of the deck. The RD-72 is 624 pounds according the manual. The lift capacity is 1,058 at 24" behind.
IF you thing weight is an issue, would it be better to go with a lighter deck like the Grizzly at 558 pounds? I don't know much about them but they are a consideration I guess. The blade tip speed is a bit slower but not sure how much that matters. Any thoughts on these?

Thanks for everybodys input. I did buy the Woods RD72 and it works pretty good with the B2920. ITs definitely heavy, but it handles it ok.
