Many years ago the DMV issued passenger and commercial plates with the same number. The guy (different name, across the state) with the commercial plates didn't pay his excise tax so that town transferred the tax bill to my wife because her car had passenger plates with the same number. The registry threatened to not renew registration and drivers license because of this overdue tax bill.

We had to get notarized letter from landlord stating years lived at the that addresses. plus a bunch of paperwork and run around to get abatement on the tax bill and blocks at the registry cleared up. The DMV and other town screwed up but expected us to pay the tax bill to make it go away.

I've seen this happen a couple times now. Someone passes away and you always seem to see some dead beat asking for donations on behalf of a family member for burial expenses. Now it's one thing if the family needs help with the burial cost, and in that instance it doesn't bother me.

What really chaps my fanny though is when you know the person's burial is taken care of already and someone is just trying to play on people's heart strings and using the death as a way to put some easy money in there pocket.

There is a guy who has been seen all over the Phoenix area, lately in Peoria, who the news media has checked due to all the complaints. Turns out he has been collecting money on street corners to pay for his dead son's burial for about 4 years. Kid must be getting pretty ripe.
