I understand that issues with aftermarket parts, but I am considering this one at $250 with free shipping and a one year warranty. If it works and gets me through this mowing season that would buy me time to consider a rebuild on the original box if I'm not satisfied with it.

That said, I'll go ahead and pull the original and have a look at what's going on, I have to do that regardless. And perhaps @Mountainman will have something too.
I replied to the post you made on my profile. I don't have a complete gearbox for a hydrostat but do have parts and some of the parts are the same as gear drive so should be able to help you out.

Thanks for responding, @Mountainman!

Can you tell me what the difference is between the HST and non-HST boxes, and what parts are the same? Its the first steering box I've fooled with since a Plymouth convertible a half century ago, so I'm feeling my way through it. I've done a good bit of research and I expect from what I've read that it will be the steering shaft/ball nut assembly that has gone south.

I got the steering wheel off yesterday afternoon, a bigger pain than I had expected, and I'm getting a pitman arm puller this afternoon so I can take that off, then I'll be ready to pull the box and see what's going on.

The gearbox case, post (shaft tube) and pitman arm are different between the hst and gear. Internals are the same though so ball nut / shaft and sector shaft are the same

Some have luck with those and some don't. Cheap enough to try i guess but i always try to steer people away
I got the box off yesterday, cleaned up the outside, left it to drain in the shop last night and opened it today. Water in the oil, and no surprise that the shaft, ball nut and bottom bearing are all toast. @Mountainman what does a good used OEM shaft go for?

Also, any recommendations on cleaning out the inside of the box? I'm thinking I could put some kerosene in there and put the shaft and top back on and shake it, maybe even put some of the loose balls back in to help with the scrubbing. There is probably a better way. I don't have a parts cleaning setup, so whatever I clean it with will be stored, along with the old oil, to start brush pile fires this winter unless I can find a good recycling option locally.
