RCW, on most newer construction, the attics vent that way.
Daren -

True - gotcha - but with a cathedral ceiling, the living space ceiling is fastened directly to the rafters. No attic at all.

Sheepfarmer has a pine ceiling attached to her rafters for the full length, as I understand it.

Jamb the space between the roof sheathing and the ceiling with fiberglass insulation, then air doesn't move along the underside of the roof sheathing, which is what you're after, especially in Michigan, where sheepfarmer is from.

Again, probably not the only issue there, but could be helped next time the roof sheathing is replaced. Absent venting, the sheathing and roof won't last their entire publicized useful life.

RCW while i smiled at the thought of anyone mistaking any part of this old house for a cathedral ceiling, that in fact is the problem that I need to solve. One of the roofers installed a ridge vent which makes the roof look like it is sagging, and probably lets the mice in, and so better ventilation from the soffit as shown by Barry instead of the fascia as before would get the airflow needed. The pink stuff doesn't block airflow now except where the mice have fluffed it up, but adding anything would. Thanks guys!
PERFECT!

Keep the rafter vents in mind if you ever to sheathing.

Best wishes!

Any ridge venting i have seen has wire mesh to keep rodents out. Some is fine enough to keep out larger flying insects like wasps and hornets. You have quite a dilemma there.

Ok, there might be a photo attached. One of the fascia boards that I covered in aluminum. Spell check changed it to fascists... Gotta love technology!
Since you're painting your new boards you won't have to worry about them for a while.

Oh crum, I just looked at the radar, and a big rain patch is headed this way. Wasn't supposed to rain until tomorrow night. I knocked off work on the fascia at dark and new boards not up :( sure hope there is no wind to blow the rain into the insulation.

Thanks guys for all the info and pictures and moral support
