Farmall H question

Starting to restore my H and I want to restore it as close to original as possible. It looks like they had two types of generator charging systems. One had an external voltage regulator and the other was the third brush generator that the operator set on low or high from the electrical box in front of the seat. Mine is a 1940 model. I would appreciate if anyone can enlighten me as to which type it had.

I "believe" that they all used the same 6 volt positive ground generator. The voltage regulator was mounted in various places. Some on the top of the generator, some on the right side near the front of the fuel tank, and some under the back of the fuel tank on the tank support. Proper location likely depends on year and which wiring harness you have. The supplemental charging setting was built in to the light switch but still incorporated the voltage regulator. Just going from memory on 2 M's and an H.

That's pretty cool, that they increased the charging rate when the lights were turned on.

I believe that the charging settings were independent of the light settings. Something like regular charge, high charge, and then the headlight on settings were on the high charge side as additional high and low beam settings.
Of course it was 6 volt, so you really had low, and lower beam headlights.
