I am the new owner of a kubota L 3400 I was wanting to know if I can run red aka farm diesel in a new tractor I heard you can't.

Never heared that one before! You didn't hear it from a revenue official trying to boost the coffers did you;):D
I doubt they would sell many machines over here if they could not be run on Red,white is nearly twice the price!!

I can't answer for your region, but in mine, the farm diesel is ultra low sulfer, and dyed red. The only difference is that it doesn't have a road tax added to it.
I would imagine that your info means that you have to run ultra low sulfer diesel, since it's in a new tractor. As long as your farm diesel is ULSD, then I would think you are fine.

I was under the impression that all diesels could use the ULSD, and that the problems were with newer engines running older formulations of fuel. It is also my understanding that the problems were not with the engines themselves, but the exhaust after treatment systems installed on "on road" diesels.

Most fuel distributers just die the ULSD and say that it's high sulfer. The reason being is they can't risk taking a load of good fuel to a place that could sell it for on road fuel. Any off road equipment should be fine to burn red fuel tractors included.

red fuel runs just fine in my dodge truck(only if i get low LOL).all our tractors run on red diesel and rotella oil.

Hodge and Bulldog are right,
The dye is simply used as an identifier so highway officials can tell if you're paying the required highway taxes. There used to be a physical difference in the fuels but nowadays it's usually all the same stuff (except the farm fuel isn't taxed as heavily). An additive to improve lubricity might not be a bad idea in older engines originally designed to run on a fuel that contained more sulfur. RC

Red diesel is high sulfur 50 PPM or more
Low sulfur is 15-50 PPM of sulfur
Ultra low is less than 15 PPM of sulfur

Red is untaxed off road and not recommended in tractors that are serviced with the latest API certified oils because the new oil does not have additives to break down the high sulfur content. These oils are formulated for new tractors running on low sulfur or ultra low sulfur fuels.

Color has nothing to do with the sulfur content. As mentioned, just a dye for tax purposes.
I believe, this argument is pretty much moot as of June 2010. In June 2010 the EPA mandate limited sulfur content of diesel to 15 ppm, for both on-road and off-road, amber or red. The only exception was NRLM, non road locomotive or marine diesel, which is allowed 500ppm sulfur until sometime in 2012. Most of us wouldn't have access to NRLM fuel which means we are using 15ppm max sulfur, ULSD, whether red or amber. NRLM is not the red, off-road, farm use diesel most of us are familiar with.
It is interesting to note the pump lableling requirements did not keep up with the EPA mandates. There are pumps here in IN that still read high sulfur greater than 500ppm, but it is 15ppm max sulfur because that is all the retailer can buy from the refiner. Don't trust the pump, talk to the supplier if it is important to you.
