Put in my order for maple syrup for the year :D:D Mom called earlier and is headed up there to visit for the week. The rule is, one of us heads that way, take orders and collect money for syrup. Got 1 1/2 gallons of cooking grade coming.:cool:

There was an elderly lady that used to come over and pick up the hickory nuts and said that her husband liked a cake she made with them, so she would have him shell them for her. Looks like it would be a lot of work. I have never tried. They are a trip hazard, like walking on ball bearings. They also explode if you are burning leaves and they are in the pile.

I can see where they would be like walking on ball bearings lol. As far as shelling them I’ve broke open a few with a hammer but there is way too little nut in them for me to shell to make anything. Was just wondering because I never heard anyone down here asking if their hickory trees had nuts.

Ofcourse not you guys got pecans all over the place..lol..
Hickory nuts are a sweeter nut, and yes they take a lot of work but mixed into cakes and cookies they make it worth while

I ate the ones I broke open and they were good but you are correct, we have pecan tree's everywhere here so no one bothers with hickory nuts.

A redhead I use to know back in the day was from NC, and she told me when she was little her father use to rake up the nuts from the trees they had and dump them in garbage cans and set them out on trash pick up days. And up here in Yankee land they cost an arm and a leg,, go figure

That sounds about right.

Here in Southern CT, not much changing yet. Been warm until the past few days. I'm sure the further north you go the better the color.

Saw a weather report, snow is already flying in Northern Maine.

It would seem that those of us that live in the hill country have no discernible accent to speak of

Yes it is a great vacation destination. Spent some time out there last summer on our way to Canada. Plan to hit Niagara Falls for a day or so also while we are in the area since we have never been there yet. It will be a fun relaxing trip either way. Been through your part of the country a few times also. Have some beautiful scenery there too.

On your way east from Niagara Falls you might want to check out the Finger Lakes region between Rochester and Syracuse. LOTS of small wineries with cheap tastings :D

People in Maine talk funny :D

Don't neithah. Well, maybe folks from Bah Hahbah, but that's for the benefit of flatlander tourists.

This is from last year, but we got a wicked pissah frost last night so colors should start popping around here.

Edit: BTW, I'm on the coast. I can see salt water from my kitchen windah.

Made it to Front Royal Va yesterday. Drove skyline drive through the Shenandoah Nat Park and as expected not much going on there but we wanted to drive it anyway. Headed to North Conway NH today and the top of Mount Washington tomorrow. Thursday we will start scouting for color then make our way to Stowe VT Friday.

Surprisingly, even after a couple of frosts here on the far East coast, the leaves have barely started to change.

Seeing some nice reds around, but that's about it.

Keep us updated on your tour! [emoji16]

Getting near peek colors here on the west side of the Adirondack's. Hope the forecasted rain in the next couple of days doesn't do it in.
